Fine Win For Tyrone Hurlers

Tyrone produced a gritty display of hurling on Sunday to defeat table toppers Roscommon at Healy Park on Sunday on a final score line of 1-16 to 1-12.

The Red Hands made the perfect start with a goal inside the opening ten seconds from Ryan Mc Kernan. Damien Casey once again proved his worth to the team with eight fine first half points, including one from almost ninety metres, as Tyrone made good use of the strong breeze blowing in their favour.

However Roscommon showed their class in flashes and with Daniel Glynn in good scoring form they reached the break trailing by four 1-10 to 1-06.

Roscommon sub Gearoid Keenan opened the scoring at the start of the second half to reduce the gap to three but Tyrone dug deep to produce a very combative second period. Chris Cross and Aidan Kelly competed for every ball around the middle while Brendan Begley, Lorcan Devlin and goalkeeper Conor Mc Elhatton made sure the Roscommon forwards had to live on scraps.

Daniel Glynn was responsible for most of the visitors’ second half scores but Tyrone ace Casey more than matched him every step of the way. The big Eoghan Ruadh man finished the game with fourteen points with his tenth point from the sideline a real wonder strike.

While the Dungannon man will get many of the plaudits for the win he will know it was a day when the work rate of the Tyrone team played a huge part in their win.

Final score: Tyrone 1-16, Roscommon 1-12.

Tyrone scorers: Damian Casey 0-14, Ryan Mc Kernan 1-0, Liam Armstrong 0-1, Bryan Mc Gurk 0-1.
