Monaghan 0-15 Tyrone 0-14

Tyrone suffered a disappointing defeat in division one of the Allianz National League at Castleblaney on Saturday night when they were edged out by neighbours Monaghan in a hard fought encounter.

The home side dominated early on with wing half forward Fintan Kelly landing three superb points as they kicked the opening four scores of the game. Colm Cavanagh and Lee Brennan reduced the deficit but a superb effort from corner back Colin Walshe edged Monaghan 0-6 to 0-2 in front. That proved to be their last score of the half though as Tyrone kicked five unanswered points.  A shot from team Captain Mattie Donnelly hit the bar on the way over and Brennan, Peter Harte and defender Michael McKernan added points to leave it 0-7 to 0-6 at the break.

A Jack McCarron free levelled matters on the restart before keeper Rory Beggan put the home side in front with a well struck long range free. Three Brennan frees had Tyrone two in front but the introduction of the influential Conor McManus settled Monaghan. He knocked over a brilliant free moments after coming on before he made it 0-10 apiece from another placed ball.

Niall Sludden and McCarron traded points before McManus weighed in with the score of the game, an outstanding effort from play from forty five metres out. It was a lead that his side were never to lose and with three minutes left to play they were four clear thanks to efforts from Dessie Ward, Owen Duffy and Beggan, the latter’s a tremendous free from the touchline underneath the Stand. To their credit Tyrone rallied in the closing stages with points from Trillick duo Richard Donnelly and Brennan but Malachy O’Rourke’s side held on to take the spoils.
