Aghaloo caused a bit of a shock in Augher on Sunday afternoon when they defeated pre match favourites Donaghmore 1-11 to 1-8 with a late, late goal from Jody Mc Glone proving the key difference.
There was little between the sides in a tight first half but even then Aghaloo looked the side most likely. Mark Mc Cormack, Enda Mc Garrity, Conor Mullen, Niall Mc Elroy and Jody Mc Glone were all to the fore as the border men outscored their opponents 0-7 to 0-4. Niall Mc Elroy (3) and Chris Dynes(2) led the team in scoring terms while Deasuin Quinn and Brannan Molloy were among the scorers for a disappointing Donaghmore side.
The Village men failed to improve after the break and they trailed by four points as the game entered the final quarter. With twelve minutes remaining however the game was turned on its head when Deasuin Quinn finished a fine team move to the net. Jody Mc Glone pointed to put two between the sides but Donaghmore, with a man advantage after Ruairi Mc Glone’s second yellow card, began to scent victory. Deasuin Quinn and Philip Donnelly scored to tie the game with the clock counting down.
Gary Hetherington’s side pushed forward but were caught by a swift counter attack that saw man of the match Jody Mc Glone punch the ball to the net to put Aghaloo three clear. Donaghmore still had time for one final attack and as the ball was launched towards the Aghaloo goal Mc Glone rose to take a superb catch and ensure the men in red and black took the win.
