Owen Roes 5K Run

Owen Roes will host their 4th annual 5K road race next Thursday evening 27th July. This year’s race will be run over a new faster course which is designed to give runners a chance to break personal best times on the evening.
Over 140 runners took to the line last year and the club is aiming to push that towards the 180 mark this year with a host of prizes on offer. Shay Carlin in a time of 17.11 and Claire McGuigan in 19.14 took the respective honours last year setting event records. Paul Houston, part of the event organising team, is in little doubt that those records will go this year.
“The course this year starts high above Glenmornan on the Crockan Road and loops downhill past Moorlough towards the GAA pitch in the village dropping a total of 60m in total from start to finish. This contrasts with the route that we had the last few years which had some hills coming home. Based on that alone, I would suggest that the event records from last year will go on the night.”
Club chairman Jude Kelly explained why the 5K is an important part of the calendar at Owen Roes. “It takes a lot of money to run a GAA Club these days as we provide football for children from U6 right through to adult football. As such we are always seeking small ways of helping to generate some revenue, and if it’s via a community event even better. All money raised as usual will get recycled back into the club to allow us to continue to fund underage activities in the Club and keeps children playing GAA and being active.”
“Last year our senior footballers all completed the run, and the young people of the area tend to look to them, and copy their habits. Therefore good habits like exercising and running are great examples to be setting. As well as the main race we’ve a 1K for U12s as well, which will take place on the pitch.”
The Leckpatrick chairman explained that the number one aim on the night is to get people out, active and have some fun. However he acknowledged that road racing does bring a competitive edge. “We’ve added to the prize fund this year with top prizes for the first male and female home standing at £100. In addition we will have prizes for 1st and 2nd in U20, senior, 40+, 50+ and 60+ categories with a number of spot prizes on offer as well thanks to many generous sponsors. In addition all the runners are invited back to the Clubrooms post-race for complimentary barbeque and prize giving. It should be a great night.”
Registration is from 6.00pm to 7.15pm at the Owen Roes Clubrooms with runners off at 7.30pm. The cost is £6 for adults, £3 for U16s and U12s costing £1 with running open to all levels of runner.

Thurs 27th July @ 6.45pm – In Killyclogher
Junior
Fionntamhnach V Achadh Lú

Fintona should perhaps be just too strong for the O’Neill’s girls in this championship opener at Ballinamullan. For Aghaloo playing in adult competition is all about developing the squad for the future yet the Pearses can take nothing for granted as they seek a place in the last four.

Senior      8-15pm
Gleann Eallaigh V An Naomh Mhic Artáin

The second game of the night on the excellent surface at Killyclogher will see the defending senior champions St Macartan’s put their title on the line against Glenelly . It is very much a case of contrasting seasons for both clubs. St Joseph’s are sitting safe in mid table with three wins from eight well aware though that the Mac’s are second in the table having won seven of their eight games and go into this game with a big league win recorded over Glenelly.

The champions have once again looked sharp this season and certainly in some people’s eyes are fancied to retain the Jarlath Kerr Cup. Both teams have a couple of injury worries the most high profile of those is Glenelly’s ace forward Siobhan Sheerin who is in a race against time to be back for Tyrone’s all Ireland quarter final.

Thurs 27th July -@ 8pm – In St Patrick’s Park Omagh
Intermediate
Domhnach Mór V Aghyaran

A stand alone fixture at the famous old Omagh ground but it could well be one of the ties of the round. In terms of quality, both teams can boast an array of county players at senior and minor level and both will feel they have a real chance of getting their hands on championship and indeed league silverware.

The St Davog’s bolstered by the likes of Sasha Byrne and Aoibhean Mc Hugh currently sit second in division two, hopping up there on the back of an impressive win over Cappagh last week. Donaghmore were pushed to the pin of their collars by Omagh last time out as the width of a post at the death denied the St Enda’s the league win.

The St Patrick’s have of course played a preliminary round this year. Rebecca McCrory was in fine scoring form as they eased past Dromore at Carrickmore. Mc Crory though alongside Michaela Mc Guigan are both carrying injuries into Thursdays clash with the rejuvenated Aghyaran.

Lee Closes In On Golden Boot

Two of the three remaining games in senior football are starred games but even at that it is going to take something spectacular for the chasing pack to overhaul Lee Brennan in the race to win the Begleys Sports sponsored golden boot. That’s because the Trillick sharpshooter is twenty four points clear of his nearest challenger Mark Carson of Greencastle. Strabane’s Warner Mullan is in third place and is the only other player to have broken the fifty point barrier so far. The winner will receive two complimentary tickets to the Teamtalk All Star banquet in the Great Northern Hotel in Bundoran on November 24th when he will receive the award.

Lee Brennan [Trillick] 7-62 [83]

Mark Carson [Greencastle] 4-47 [59]

Warner Mullan [Strabane] 0-50 [50]

Mark Bradley [Killyclogher] 1-45 [48]

Martin Penrose [Carrickmore] 2-41 [47]

Johnny Lafferty [Urney] 4-34 [46]

PJ Lavery [Clonoe] 6-28 [46]

Kyle Coney [Ardboe] 1-42 [45]

Conor O’Donnell [Omagh] 2-39 [45]

Niall Gormley [Trillick] 4-32 [44]

Darragh Leads The Way In D2

With three games left to play Darragh Kavanagh leads the way at the summit of the Begleys Sports sponsored D1 scoring charts. Augher may have lost last weekend but Darragh’s weighed in with 0-11 and that leaves him nineteen points clear of the winner from the last two season’s Ronan McHugh. Ronan of course wasn’t in action as it was a starred game and with two of the last three games also being starred ones it is unlikely that Darragh will be caught. Peter Hughes is third with Philip Lennon and Mark Corry completing the top five. The winner will receive two complimentary tickets to the Teamtalk All Star banquet in the Great Northern Hotel in Bundoran on November 24th when he will receive the award.

Darragh Kavanagh [Augher] 8-65 [89]

Ronan McHugh [Aghyaran] 7-49 [70]

Peter Hughes [Eskra] 2-57 [63]

Philip Lennon [Kildress] 4-49 [61]

Mark Corry [Castlederg] 4-46 [58]

Matthew Carberry [Cookstown] 2-47 [53]

Sean Cavanagh [Moy] 7-30 [51]

Errigal Are Minor Champions

Errigal Ciaran clinched the minor championship title in style at Pearse Park, Galbally on Wednesday evening when a surging final twenty minutes saw them completely overwhelm neighbours Killeeshil.

Six days after losing out in the League decider the Dunmoyle based lads were determined not to end their campaign empty handed but nobody could have foreseen that the winning margin would be eighteen points.  The winners looked the hungrier side throughout and once they got on top of Killeeshil they ruthlessly put them away.  Killeeshil didn’t play the football that they are capable of on the night but they would be first to admit that they were beaten by the better side.

Darragh Canavan had the opening score after only eleven seconds but by the 9th minute Killeeshil had their noses in front thanks to points from Jason Doyle, Niall Loughran and Cormac Donaghy. Canavan and Ciaran Traynor then edged Errigal Ciaran in front but by the end of the opening quarter it was 0-4 apiece after Michael O’Neill split the posts.

Pauric Traynor then gave Errigal a lead that they were never to lose and in the 26th minute Canavan created the first goal which Tommy Owens palmed home from close range. Loughran replied with a Killeeshil point but it was Errigal who had the final say of the half when Canavan darted in from the left wing to fist over.

Trailing 1-6 to 0-5 and now playing against the wind Killeeshil had it all to do in the second half but they began well. Tomas Hoy pointed before centre half back Liam Hughes got forward twice to point with either foot and all of a sudden the gap was down to the minimum. It was Killeeshil’s best spell in the game but it was to come to an abrupt end as the winners stepped on the gas.

Canavan gained possession and weaved through the Killeeshil defence before laying it of for Pauric Traynor to finish to the net. Canavan then pointed before Pauric Traynor, Peter Og McCartan, Cormac Quinn and Ethan Neill combined for the later to hammer the ball to the net to make it 2-1 without reply in a blistering two minute spell.

Errigal Ciaran now led by double scores, 3-7 to 0-8, and with just a quarter of an hour left to play there was only going to be one winner. Ciaran Traynor converted a penalty after Neill had been fouled and after Canavan had raised another white flag left half back Pauric McNeilis got forward to get his name on the score sheet. Defender Ethan Owens then got a goal and after O’Neill had Killeeshil’s last score it was the winners who closed the game out with goal number five from corner back Cormac Quinn as it finished 6-9 to 0-9.

Donaghmore Lift Grade Two Minor Championship

Donaghmore produced a complete team performance as they defeated Moy in the Grade Two minor championship final at Eglish on Wednesday evening winning 3-17 to 2-6.

The “Village” lads started brightly and were five up inside the opening five minutes as Eoin Kavanagh, Fergal Donaghy and Dermott Mc Aleer found the target. Donaghmore moved seven ahead after a further point from Fergal Donaghy and a fine score from the boot of team captain Sean Donaghy.

It took Moy fifteen minutes to open their account with Michael Conroy converting a brace of frees. However Donaghmore continued to dominate and Sean Donaghy and Eoin Kavanagh added further points before big full forward Dermot Mc Aleer reacted quickest to a fine save from Moy goalkeeper Niall Mc Cormack. He finished the ball to the net to send his team in at the break leading 1-11 to 0-3.

Moy started the second half in a positive manner with goals from Michael Conroy and Jamie Coleman. However Mc Aleer was on hand with his and his team’s second goal to ease any Donaghmore nerves. The winners controlled the remainder of the game restricting Moy to only three further points while they added another 1-5 with their final goal coming from the boot of midfielder Conor Woods.

Team captain Sean Donaghy received the trophy on behalf of his team mates from Tyrone CCC representative Cathal Daly.

Quality across all Grades

There are some really enticing contests set to unfold right across all grades with National champions competing in almost every competition

There are over 330 matches scheduled for the weekend ahead and all in the local community and club are very excited for what promises to be another very special “Social GAA Handball Weekend” in Loughmacrory.

“We launched this flagship GAA Handball event in 2014 to coincide with the opening of our unique and much heralded One Wall Handball Arena. So far there have been over 750 players who have competed in the event at the first three Showdown Tournaments and that will reach the 1,000 mark by the end of this weekend”, commented Club Chairman, Chris Curran.

“While Waly Amaro is not making the journey to defend his Men’s Open crown, there is no doubt that we have assembled one of the best Men’s and Ladies Open fields to date with the players across all grades amongst the very best in the world. An impressive total of 19 counties from around Ireland is represented while the quality through the under-age ranks is second to none.”

Loughmacrory celebrate unique occasion

Loughmacrory Club has seen a terrific tradition of the sport for many decades and this year also brings a unique occasion too. To coincide with the event, the Club are launching details of their upcoming new book “150 Years of GAA Handball and Counting” which marks the 50th anniversary of the previous book “100 years of handball” was published. Having enjoyed success at all levels in the game at provincial, all Ireland and world level, it has certainly been a great journey for the Loughmacrory Club and this major weekend Tournament is a testament to the efforts of so many for so long.

“We are very much about people and the youth of our Community enjoying the sport and deriving the terrific benefits which can be taken from it. It really is a sport for all and that is exemplified by the fact we have 8-year-olds playing in our Tournament right up to the ‘not so young’ in the Master’s grades.” added the former GAA Handball Ireland CEO.

“We have had so many milestones in the history of the club. Our 60×30 Court became the first covered court in Ireland back in 1967, Mickey Conway was the first ever All Ireland Champion from Tyrone, for the Club back in 1970 with his brilliant Junior all Ireland win, 8 men created a record-breaking Guinness World Record with the 80 hour handball marathon in 1980, Ciaran Curran created history as a first ever all Ireland Juvenile title winner for the County and Ulster back in 1984 and went on to be the first Irish player to win 4 in a row of US National Junior titles. Hugh Duff’s many famous triumphs, the work in the 80s and 90s at Juvenile level by John Curran, Peter Curran and Kieran Kelly and the impact by historical figures such as Frank McCrystall and MJ Kelly are just a few other things that stand out.”

“There have also been more recent successes including an All Ireland Senior Club Championship final appearance, All Ireland Feile title wins, successes by the likes of Brian Donaghy, Ciaran Meenagh, Lisa McAleer and Aoife Kelly as well as the exploits in more recent years of Antoin Fox, Mairead Fox, Caitlin Conway, Dara Curran, Ronan Curran, Shane Grimes and Dearbhail Fox. We have certainly enjoyed significant memories in terms of major title wins. There have also been much more but our Club is also about more than just titles and successes.”

“The terrific handball being enjoyed by the large group of players in our Men’s Challenger League is what typifies the sport in our area. It is a great outlet for anyone to get involved in and, in a time when mental and physical health and well-being are very much to the fore, we are delighted to cater for so many in our facilities. The efforts of so many club members, officials, coaches and players over 60 years has really what has been the cornerstone of Loughmacrory’s legacy of being amongst the best GAA Handball clubs in the Country. We hope it may continue for many more to come too” said the current Chairman ahead of this weekend’s action.

Another super set of quality fields of players across all the grades is what makes this a special Tournament and also a unique Social GAA Handball weekend. Action gets underway on Friday evening at 5 pm and will continue all through Saturday until the Men’s and Ladies Open Finals on Saturday night. There is, of course, a full program of Semi Finals and Finals on Sunday too with all the major action then to come from around 2 pm on Sunday.

The Club has put out an open invitation to all Club members, players, coaches, and officials – past and present, to come along particularly on the Saturday night and witness the brilliant local spectacle. There will be photographs, videos, and photos taken over the course of the evening too which will all be included in the Book and which will be launched at a Special Gala Evening in November – details to be announced at the weekend.

Macartans Ease Through In Pat Fahy Senior Championship

Macartans put their championship clash with Glenelly on Thursday evening to bed with a dominant first half display that saw Chloe Mc Caffrey hit three goals and Joline Donnelly a fine brace as they reached the break leading 5-7 to no score.

Glenelly struggled to get the ball out of their defence for most of the first half as Macartans speed and use of the ball created numerous chances. Mc Caffrey and the Donnelly girls virtually owned the ball at times while their high pressing game meant that Glenelly managed only one shot on target during the first half.

Things improved for the North Tyrone girls after the break as Michaela Morris, Roma O’Hagan, Aisling O’Kane and Maria O’Hagan took the game to their more illustrious opponents. A converted penalty from Aisling O’Kane two minutes into the second half gave them hope but they failed to breach the Macartans rearguard again until injury time when they hit four unanswered points to leave the final score Macartans 5-11, Glenelly 1-4.

Victory for Aghyaran In Patrick Fahy Intermediate Championship

Aghyaran 5-16 Donaghmore 2-6
Aghyaran turned in a powerhouse display to ease to a more than comfortable nineteen point win over a disappointing Donaghmore at St Patrick’s Park.

Despite a bright start with a Beth Moore goal and Rebecca Mc Crory point Donaghmore were soon on the back foot. Aimee Coyle rattled in 2-2. Caroline Byrne hit a goal and the impressive Sasha Byrne tagged on 0-4 in a first half blitz with the St Davog’s leading 3-6 to 1-6 at the break.
A quick Emma Hegarty goal four minutes after the restart closed the gap to four but Donaghmore were not to score again. The Byrne’s added a goal apiece and Coyle finished with 2-6 as Aghyaran kept the scoreboard ticking over throughout the second half.
This was a disappointing outing for Stephen Rice’s side who could not convert what possession they had into scores. The Aghyaran defence turned in an excellent shift but it was the clinical edge to their finishing that impressed.
Junior Football Championship
Fintona advanced to the junior semi-final with Aghaloo withdrawing.

Fri 28th July @ 6.45pm & 8.15pm – Venue Drumragh

Sperrin Óg V Aireagal Chiarain

An intriguing double bill of senior quarter finals is pencilled in for the excellent facilities of Clanabogan Park on Friday night. Last year’s beaten finalists Killeeshil will go toe to toe with Clan na Ngael in the evening’s first game with the St Mary’s very determined to make a return to finals day focused on going one better than last year.

With an abundance of talent to call on the Killeeshil side if anything are better placed than last term. Zoe Loughran is back to full fitness again and alongside Grainne Rafferty there’s a real potency about their attack. Throughout the squad they have quality but the North Tyrone girls are not just making up the numbers despite a difficult division one campaign that has seen them carve out just a single win.

Killeeshil secured a big league win when the teams met in May and they remain well placed for the league’s top four.

Sperrin Og booked their place in the quarter final against Errigal Ciaran on the back of a thrilling encounter at Kildress against Ardboe. It took the introduction of Niamh O’Neill to help the Greencastle girls over the line as the County ace scored 1-5 in twenty second half minutes. They will need a similar display in Friday’s second game at Drumragh if they are to halt Errigal.

Spearheaded by the likes of Aine Canavan, Maria Canavan and Lycrecia Quinn up front they have plenty of threat while their defence is the tightest through all three grades conceding just 3-20 in seven games ! Errigal are many people’s favourites to claim the title. They lead division one remaining unbeaten this term but the championship is the championship and they will be well aware of the threat posed by this talented Greencastle side.

Fri 28th July @ 6.45pm & 8.15pm – Venue: Carrickmore

Junior
An Mhaigh V Both Domhnaigh
An Charraig V Trí Leac

A double bill in the junior championship and perhaps this year’s junior championship will be the most keenly contested with every team having a realistic chance of winning The Brenda Logue Cup. Three of Friday’s combatants have come through the prelims. Moy eased to a comfortable win over Beragh to set up their meeting with the youthful Badoney while Rock and Trillick both recorded big wins on route to their head to head.

Badoney enjoyed minor success this season and they will rely heavily on the bulk of that squad as they attempt to relive the success they enjoyed under Vinny McCullagh. They enjoyed a decent league win over a Moy remain a much unknown entity this term.

The Tir na nOg have had a mixed league campaign and find themselves mid table. They could well produce another good performance on this occasion. Carrickmore also hosts the hugely anticipated clash of two of the junior big hitters Rock and Trillick.

Both teams are level on points in division three and while the Reds pulled away to seal a decent win over the St Patrick’s in the league clash at Rock this championship clash could well be a much closer encounter . There’s experience in both camps while the exciting Emma Brennan is certainly one to watch for the Donnelly Park outfit.

Killeeshil And Errigal Ease Through To Ladies Semis

Friday evening’s senior championship double header at Clanabogan resulted in big wins for Killeeshil and Errigal Ciaran and sees both sides progressing to the last four.

Killeeshil proved far too strong for a gallant Clan na nGael outfit with goals from Shannon Stevenson, Niamh Mc Cool, Zoe Loughran and Grainne Rafferty easing the St Mary’s to victory.  A special mention must go to Zoe Loughran who did not score in the first half but bagged three goals and a point in a very impressive second thirty minutes.

The Errigal Ciaran versus Sperrin Og game was a closer affair but was never in doubt as Errigal’s exciting forward line created some excellent scores in a very dominant first half. Indeed had it not been for at least four superb stops by the Sperrin Og goalkeeper Michaela Gillen the margin of defeat could have been greater.  Ailise Gormley, Ciara Quinn, Lycrecia Quinn and Maria Canavan all found the net while Niamh O’Neill and Kim Mc Cullagh both goaled for Sean Teague’s team.

Errigal will now face Macartans in the semi final while Killeeshil will have to wait for the outcome of the Strabane v Aodh Ruadh quarter final. The remainder of the championship quarter finals will be completed over the rest of the weekend.

Junior Football Championship
The junior football championship quarter final double bill at Carrickmore produced a thriller as Moy edged out Badoney and Trillick booked their semi-final berth with a facile win over Rock.

Trillick 5-17 Rock 0-1
Seven different scorers on target for Trillick who met little resistance from a weakened Rock at Carrickmore. Emma Brennan was in top form once again scoring 1-8 while Nuala Kelly, Fiona Owens, Louise McCarney and Ciara Brogan also tagged on goals with four of those goals coming in the second half.
The Reds led 1-10 to 0-1 at the break and turned up the heat in a powerful second half to secure their semi-final spot.
Moy 0-11 Badoney 1-7
A narrow win here for Moy against a youthful Badoney

Tattyreagh hosted Newtownstewart on Friday night and recovered from being 0-7 to 0-3 down early in the first half to win 1-12 to 0-9. Brendan Boyle did most of the scoring for the visitors as they began the game well. However from the twentieth minute on Tattyreagh hit a purple patch and scored nine in a row to take control of the game. Once again James Darcy, Colly Harkin and Robert Porter were among the point scorers for the winners and when Darcy found the net on fifty two minutes any hope of a comeback for Newtownstewart evaporated.

Errigal Ciaran travelled to Healy Park on Saturday afternoon and produced a very hard working display to defeat the home side 1-10 to 0-9. Former county star Davy Harte led the line brilliantly for Errigal and finished the day with 0-6 including four fine first half points. Ben Mc Donnell managed to manufacture a goal midway through the first half with a lovely low finish to put Errigal in control. Omagh struggled to create any chances of note and were overly dependent on big midfielder Conan Grugan for scores.  The St Endas lads did throw the shackles off late in the game as they went in search of the win but Errigal defended resolutely and picked them off on the break for late scores from Peter Og Mc Cartan and Mark Kavanagh to seal the win.

Intermediate Championship

Loughmacrory 2-12 Galbally 3-5

Loughmacrory rattled off 1-5 in a blistering final seven minutes to book their place in the semi-final of the Intermediate championship and break the hearts of a battling Galbally at Pomeroy in the process. The Pearses  who have had a torrid league campaign led by seven points heading into the last quarter yet inspired by veterans Lisa McAleer and Kerry Ward Loughmacrory rallied with Emily Donaghy’s goal proving vital.

Galbally keeper Laura Kane saved a penalty in the closing stages but they just could not get the scores they required and the St Teresa’s advance. Adriana McNamee’s goal just before half time gave Galbally a two point half time lead, Kellie Boyle saving Eimear Tally’s early penalty.

It had been an error ridden low scoring first half, neither side able to pull away and both guilty of some poor handling. Eimear Tally blasted home a second Pearses goal five minutes into the second half and when Niamh Donnelly found the net on forty four minutes the gap was seven and Loughmacrory looked out of the contest.

The loss of influential defender Michelle McGuigan through injury was a body blow for Galbally and the Lough responded. Bronagh Gallagher, an excellent long range point from Laura Ward and a brace from Mc Aleer closed the gap while a defensive mix up allowed Donaghy in to ram home the vital goal. Galbally pressed late on and hit two wides as Loughmacrory held on for a four point win.

Junior Championship

Clonoe 3-8  Kildress 1-6

The O’Rahilly’s will face Moy in the semi-final of the junior championship after they accounted for Kildrees at Cookstown. Clonoe led throughout and just had too much power for the Tones who certainly worked hard but came up short against a very talented Clonoe side.

Bronagh McOscair helped herself to a couple of goals with Orlagh Gavin also bagging a three pointer for the Rahilly’s who remain the favourites for the Brenda Logue Cup.
