ALL IRELAND MINOR SEMI-FINAL

Tyrone 2-6 Cork 1-11

Despite turning in a battling display at Mullingar on Saturday the Tyrone minors missed out on a place in the all Ireland minor final, losing by just two points to Cork. Two second half goals from Chloe McCaffrey and Ardboe’s Annie Devlin had hauled Tyrone back into the contest as they trailed by seven but the experience and quality of the southern girls proved decisive in the final outcome.

Cork dominated throughout but hit some eleven wides and created eight goal chances including five one on ones. Tyrone struggled to match them in several sectors of the park for long periods and but for five superb saves from Tyrone keeper Caoimhe Meeke Cork could have won by a much greater margin. Saoirse Noonan was deadly accurate with frees while midfielders  Ciara McCarthy and Nicole Quinn were superb. Cork attacked with vigour and were resolute and disciplined at the back as they built up a six point lead at the break.

Emma Cleary beat Meeke for their only goal with Noonan, Laura O’Mahony and  Grace Culloty tagging on points. Chloe McCaffrey 0-2 and Meave Maxwell with Tyrone’s three points although Tyrone also had goal chances. Maria Canavan hit a post from a long range free, Maxwell brought out the best in Sarah Murphy with McCaffrey rattling the crossbar.

In a dominant display Cork pulled seven clear by the fortieth minute but Tyrone were right back in the tie when Maria Canavan set McCaffrey up for a cracking goal. Cork pulled away once again and could easily have been out of sight only for the quality of Meeke and full back Aimee Daly as Cork’s forwards created chance after chance.

Anne Devlin fired home a second Tyrone goal with five minutes remaining and it ignited a stirring fightback. Meabh Corrigan, Canavan and McCaffrey took the game to Cork and the impressive Caitlin Kelly was denied a goal when Murphy saved with her feet. Maria Canavan tagged on her third point late on but it was Cork who held out for the win and a place in the all Ireland final..

Tyrone: Chloe McCaffrey 1-2, Annie Devlin 1-0, Maria Canavan 0-3, Meave Maxwell 0-1

Cork: Emma Cleary 1-2, Saoirse Noonan 0-5, Ciara McCarthy, Laura O’Mahony, Grace Culloty, Sadhbh O’Leary 0-1 each

Derry 1-22 Cavan 2-12

Derry justified their favourites tag at Clones on Sunday afternoon when they won an enthralling  Electric Ireland Ulster minor championship title final.

Derry led 0-14 to 1-7 at the break ahead of a superb opening thirty minutes. Derry could have had a goal after only thirty seconds but Declan Cassidy fired narrowly wide of the left hand post.

They were soon into their stride though and by the 5th minute they had registered four points through Patrick Quigg, Lorcan McWilliams, Conleth McShane and Oisin McWilliams.

Sixty seconds later Cavan were back in contention when midfielder James Smith smashed home a brilliant goal. Cian Madden then equalised but Derry were looking the better side.

By the end of the opening quarter they had already amassed ten points with Quigg, Ben McCarron and Cassidy all on target. Padraig McGrogan and Patrick Lynch then traded points before Madden closed the gap to four.

Cavan were dealt a blow when goal scorer Smith was black carded and Derry increased their advantage with a brace of frees from McWilliams. Cavan though closed out the half with efforts from Tiarnan Reilly and Philip Rogers.

Cavan picked up where they had left off on the restart with Oisin Pierson scoring twice. McCarron, Cassidy and Quigg then eased Derry five clear but they were rocked when Rogers palmed in a goal in the 41st minute.

It was anybody’s game at this stage as Lorcan McWilliams twice exchanged points with Madden and Pierson. Derry then grabbed that scrambled goal through McCarron and they closed the game out with points from substitutes Alex Doherty and Fergal Mortimer.

TYRONE 2-17 DOWN 0-15

Tyrone won back to back Anglo Celt Cups for the fourth time in their history when they turned on the style in the second half at St.Tiernachs Park in Clones on Sunday afternoon to comfortably defeat underdogs Down before a crowd of 31, 912.

The Mourne men gave as good as they got in the first half and may well have gone in at the break with their noses in front had Darragh O’Hanlon not fired a goal chance just wide of the left hand post in the closing stages. Tyrone led 0-7 to 0-5 at the short whistle and when they posted seven points without reply in the third quarter the Anglo Celt Cup was on its way back to the O’Neill County. Substitute Ronan O’Neill came off the bench to putting the icing on the cake with two well taken goals on a day when every player in a Tyrone jersey played third part in securing a 15th Ulster senior crown.

The outstanding Padraig Hampsey landed two early points and with Peter Harte and Mattie Donnelly also on target the winners led 0-4 to 0-1 by the 13th minute, Shay Millar the Down marksman. A superb run and point from Ryan Johnston narrowed the gap but Tyrone responded with a kicked point from Niall Sludden and a fisted one from team Captain Sean Cavanagh. Niall Donnelly, O’Hanlon and Conor Maginn helped reduce the deficit to the minimum as Down enjoyed their best spell of the contest. In first half injury time O’Hanlon was wide from that goal chance before Donnelly had the final say for Tyrone when he fisted over.

David Mulgrew had the opening score of the second half after a dozen seconds and Tyrone never looked back. Cavanagh from a free and Mark Bradley from play stretched Tyrone’s advantage as a struggling Down lost Kevin McKernan to a black card. Peter Harte knocked over a free before an outstanding Declan McClure catch led to another Bradley score.

Conall McCall fired over an outstanding score and moments later his brother Tiernan followed suit with a fine effort from distance as well. In the 55th minute it was game over when McClure and Donnelly combined for the latter to fist the ball to O’Neill he expertly finished past keeper Michael Cunningham. Cunningham then converted a long range free with O’Hanlon and Caolan Mooney also finding the range although the keep had to be alert to tip over a Hampsey drive.

With five minutes of normal time left to play Cunningham was powerless though as Darren McCurry found fellow substitute O’Neill with a great pass and the Omagh man did the rest as brilliantly chipped the ball into the net. O’Hanlon and Mooney had Down points but so did Trillick duo Donnelly and Lee Brennan and while the Red Hands had Cathal McCarron sent off late on they were emphatic winners in the end.

Owen Roes 5K Run

Owen Roes will host their 4th annual 5K road race next Thursday evening 27th July. This year’s race will be run over a new faster course which is designed to give runners a chance to break personal best times on the evening.
Over 140 runners took to the line last year and the club is aiming to push that towards the 180 mark this year with a host of prizes on offer. Shay Carlin in a time of 17.11 and Claire McGuigan in 19.14 took the respective honours last year setting event records. Paul Houston, part of the event organising team, is in little doubt that those records will go this year.
“The course this year starts high above Glenmornan on the Crockan Road and loops downhill past Moorlough towards the GAA pitch in the village dropping a total of 60m in total from start to finish. This contrasts with the route that we had the last few years which had some hills coming home. Based on that alone, I would suggest that the event records from last year will go on the night.”
Club chairman Jude Kelly explained why the 5K is an important part of the calendar at Owen Roes. “It takes a lot of money to run a GAA Club these days as we provide football for children from U6 right through to adult football. As such we are always seeking small ways of helping to generate some revenue, and if it’s via a community event even better. All money raised as usual will get recycled back into the club to allow us to continue to fund underage activities in the Club and keeps children playing GAA and being active.”
“Last year our senior footballers all completed the run, and the young people of the area tend to look to them, and copy their habits. Therefore good habits like exercising and running are great examples to be setting. As well as the main race we’ve a 1K for U12s as well, which will take place on the pitch.”
The Leckpatrick chairman explained that the number one aim on the night is to get people out, active and have some fun. However he acknowledged that road racing does bring a competitive edge. “We’ve added to the prize fund this year with top prizes for the first male and female home standing at £100. In addition we will have prizes for 1st and 2nd in U20, senior, 40+, 50+ and 60+ categories with a number of spot prizes on offer as well thanks to many generous sponsors. In addition all the runners are invited back to the Clubrooms post-race for complimentary barbeque and prize giving. It should be a great night.”
Registration is from 6.00pm to 7.15pm at the Owen Roes Clubrooms with runners off at 7.30pm. The cost is £6 for adults, £3 for U16s and U12s costing £1 with running open to all levels of runner.

Strabane Sigersons G.A.A. Health and Wellbeing Committee and the club’s Neighbourhood Renewal Project via their Co-ordinator Aodhán Harkin promoted a “Care in the Sun” message to all the participants and parents at the club’s recent Tyrone G.A.A. Summer Coaching Camp held at Páirc Mhic Sioghair, Ballycolman Estate Strabane.

Sunscreen and “Care in the Sun” bookmark cards kindly donated by Cancer Focus NI, were made available free of charge to the large number of children and parents present.

Ciaran McLaughlin, Strabane Sigersons Club Health and Wellbeing Officer, noted “The provision of sunscreen highlights to members the importance of taking care in the sun. Even here in Ireland although the weather may not be sizzling, skin cancers are becoming increasingly common and it’s important we highlight the need to be careful in the sun.”

Sigersons G.A.A. Neighbourhood Renewal Project Co-ordinator Aodhán Harkin added “Taking part in sport and being active outdoors is good for our health but despite our unpredictable weather we are still exposed to significant levels of ultraviolet radiation from the sun, even on cloudy or breezy days.”

Warmest thanks to Cancer Focus NI for the kind provision of the sunscreen and information cards it was greatly appreciated by all those in attendance who enjoyed a great week of coaching, fun and games in a safe environment with the sunscreen proving vital during several days of outstanding weather which we enjoyed.

A large crowd attended the launch of the All Ireland Football Championship this afternoon at sun kissed Loughmacrory including Ciaran Kilkenny of Dublin, Ronan Mc Namee Tyrone, Ciaran Murtagh Roscommon, GAA President Aoghan O’Fearghail and of course the Sam Maguire too.

Host Darragh Moloney introduced club chairman Stephen Mc Cullagh who welcomed everyone to the superbly appointed Tyrone venue which looked resplendent in the bright sunshine.

The fantastic weather added to the occasion with the club’s superb facilities on view and the loch also shining in the background.

The draw for the quarter finals has thrown up several potentially mouth watering ties all of which of course are dependent on the outcome of the final set of qualifiers.

Now that the provincial finals have been completed attention will turn to the business end of the championship. From here on there is no room for error. It is winner takes all football with the ultimate prize of an All Ireland title up for grabs, but first up for the provincial champions is the minefield of the quarter finals. It is all building up nicely with the cream very much coming to the top.

Páirc Mhic Sioghair Strabane was a hive of activity last week as large numbers of boys and girls were in attendance to participate in the annual Tyrone Summer Camp. The event was blessed with fine weather all week so much so that the club provided the children with sun cream and information cards kindly supplied by Cancer Focus NI.

The camp was coordinated by former Tyrone great Conor Gormley with an excellent squad of coaches and club volunteers ensuring that the children in attendance enjoyed an excellent week of coaching, fun and games with many new friendships made along the way. All of the participants also received the new Club Tyrone kit and a backpack.

Apart from the coaches there are many others that need to be thanked for their contribution over the past week. Tom Brown and Martin “L” O’Kane for all their work and effort in having the facilities open and tidy. To Louise, Wendy, Jessica and Michelle who looked after the teas and to all the parents who provided the vast array of refreshments, it was deeply appreciated by everyone. Thanks also to youth coaches Niamh, Aoife, Erin and Stacey for their outstanding contribution as always.

A massive word of thanks is extended to Lisnafin Ardnalee Trust Cross Community Development Association in partnership with Derry City and Strabane District Council for their kind financial contribution towards the event which was warmly welcomed and much appreciated.

Sigersons Club Chairperson Liam Sweeney paid tribute to all of the above named and others who made any contribution at the conclusion of the camp especially the parents, grandparents and guardians.

Comhghairdeas agus maith sibh to all the winners of the various categories and hopefully all of the participants enjoyed the camp and will continue to play Gaelic games with the club in the times ahead.

The winners of the personalities of the camp were Cheyanne Gentles and Crystal McCrossan, Skills Test winners were Riley Neeson and Joe Bishop whilst Rory Doherty and Ria Donaghey were selected to play at half-time in the Tyrone Senior Football Championship final. Several other presentations were made in the various age groups.

Apologies if anyone was omitted from this report as so many assisted in what was a week to be fondly remembered by all.

Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir.

Edendork Remain On Course For Minor Double

Edendork are still on course for a minor double after their 1-12 to 2-7 win over a determined Owen Roes side in Tuesday night’s semi final.

The East Tyrone lads opened the scoring through Ruairi Conlon in the second minute but points from Damian Mc Crossan and Jack Kelly put Owen Roes ahead after six minutes.

Cian Ferguson’s fine score drew the teams level five minutes later before Edendork midfielder Odhran Donnelly proved his worth once again to his team as his pace and ball carrying ability helped him create several good scoring chances. His 1-2 helped his team reach the break 1-4 to 0-3 in front.

The league champions continued to dominate possession after the restart with Ryan Mc Curry, Donnelly and Ruairi Conlon particularly prominent. However determined play from Oisin Dooher, Peter O’Flaherty and Danial Houston ensured Owen Roes remained in the game. A goal from Oran Roddy reduced the deficit to two points but four points in a row from Ferguson, Mc Curry (2) and Luke Ferguson put Edendork on top once again.

With Edendork leading by six it seemed the game was up but Owen Roes continued to drive forward with Conn Tinney, Adam Mc Elwee, Jack Kelly and Conor Devine really putting their shoulders to the wheel. Tinney finished a fine team move to the net before a last minute shot was cleared off the line by the diving Ruairi Conlon and seconds later when the whistle sounded it was Edendork who had made it through to a meeting with Beragh in next week’s final.

Dungannon lifted their first grade one minor league title since 2002 when they emerged worthy winners over Errigal Ciaran in a keenly contested league final at Killeeshil on Thursday evening.

The Clarkes were eager to avenge their championship defeat at the hands of the same opponents and they made a great start to the game as they established a 1-5 to 0-1 lead by the end of the opening quarter with points from  James Morgan, Oisin Cowan and Cormac Hughes after a brilliantly taken goal from Captain Dylan O’Hagan after only two minutes. Errigal Ciaran responded with a well taken major of their own from Darragh Canavan but it was Dungannon who led 1-9 to 1-3 at halftime.

Frees from Canavan and Peter Og McCartan kept Errigal in touch while Tommy Owens grabbed a goal for them as well. Dungannon though didn’t panic with Morgan taking his personal hail to half a dozen and Hughes taking his to four. A goal from substitute Patrick Keogh settled the issue on a night when Errigal Ciaran had to wait until the 57th minute for their one and only point from play from Ciaran Traynor. Wing back Odhran Robinson got a goal for Errigal Ciaran deep into injury time but it was Dungannon’s night as it finished 2-14 to 3-7.

Newtownstewart Win Grade 2 Minor League

Newtownstewart made up for their championship final defeat at the hands of Donaghmore when they defeated Trillick in a high quality and very exciting league final at Clanabogan on Thursday evening 4-11 to 2-11.

Both teams produced some fantastic football in a real thriller of a game that swung one way and then the other before late goals from second half sub Jamie Mc Aleer sealed the win for the St. Eugene’s.

Early scores from Cormac Rodgers gave the winners a good start as they built up a three point lead after seven minutes. Trillick then hit a real purple patch as, inspired by James Garrity and Michael Gallagher, they moved four clear hitting 1-4 without reply including a superb goal from James Garrity.

Newtown were rattled but with Torigh Nicholas and Pauric Rodgers showing well up front they reached the break two in front 1-6 to 1-4.

The second half was every bit as good as the first as both sides created numerous chances. A second goal from James Garrity put Trillick 2-6 to 1-8 to the good but almost immediately that lead was wiped out as Cormac Rodgers cut in from the right before unleashing an unstoppable shot to the net.

Luke Mc Hugh and Ryan Kelly swapped points before Jamie Mc Aleer bagged the first of his two goals to put Newtownstewart in control. Ryan Kelly landed a brace of points for Trillick to keep them in the game but Mc Aleer found the net again to seal the win and the league title for a talented Newtownstewart team. Mind you it took two superb saves by goalkeeper Gavin Traynor and a brilliant block by Aodhan Mc Namee to ensure there was to be no late drama.

Cappagh Defeat Loughmacrory in U-14 Thriller

Cappagh and Loughmacrory served up a high scoring and very entertaining U-14 Grade 2 championship final at Greencastle on Sunday morning before the Killyclogher based team emerged 4-9 to 3-7 winners.

In such a high scoring game forward lines normally grab the headlines but in Sunday’s game it was the goalkeepers who were the real stars of this one with Oran Mc Aleer Cappagh and Conor Kelly Loughmacrory both outstanding for their teams.

Loughmacrory started well and by the fifteenth minute had opened up a 2-3 to 0-0 lead with Gareth Donaghy and Eoin Mc Elholm both finding the net. Playing into the breeze Cappagh were struggling to get the ball into the danger zone and when they did they found Kelly in goals impossible to beat.

A point from Patrick Corcoran and a fine goal from Dara Hayes in the 22nd minute however helped settle the Cappagh lads and with Cathair Conway, Tom Mc Morrow and Matthew Hayes gradually getting to the pace of the game they began to create chances. Michael Rafferty, Philip Hegarty and Caolan O’Hagan pushed forward at every opportunity and helped set up Conor Corcoran for Cappagh’s second goal.

With the clock ticking towards thirty minutes and two points between the teams it looked as if the sides would go in at the break with very little in it. However Loughmacrory won a penalty which was converted by Gareth Donaghy and Loughmacrory reached the short whistle leading 3-4 to 2-2.

The second half saw no let up in the pace or quality as both sides produced some fabulous end to end football. Cappagh made good use of the breeze but once again found Kelly in the Loch goals in outstanding form. Matthew Hayes gave his team the perfect start with a goal two minutes into the half. However Loughmacrory responded well with points from Zak Devine and Gareth Donaghy to lead by four.

Cappagh pushed up on the Loughmacrory kickouts allowing corner back Tom Mc Morrow to venture into the forward line. He got on the end of a fine team move to finish to the net in the 39th minute before adding a point a minute later. The Ballinamullen boys were beginning to make their size tell but Loughmacrory made them battle for every ball.

Further points from Hayes and Corcoran helped put Cappagh ahead for the first time as the game entered the final ten minutes.

The Loch lads showed great heart and Gareth Donaghy, Zak Devine, Eoin Mc Elholm and Oisin Mc Callan drove their side forward causing problems for the Cappagh defence. Devine and Donaghy drew brilliant saves from Oran Mc Aleer in the Cappagh goals to keep them in front and eventually they lifted the siege and added three late points from Corcoran (2) and Hayes to seal the win.

Final score: Cappagh 4-9, Loughmacrory 3-7.

Clogher scored 1-16 in their game with Clan na nGael but still lost out after the north Tyrone side plundered two goals in each half on their way to a hard fought win. Clogher led at the break 0-11 to 2-2 with Fergal McKenna, Ryan Mc Caughey and Conor Shiels landing seven points between them. Clan responded with goals apiece from Dominic Devine and Joe Ball to keep them in the game and second half goals from Stephen O’Neill and Aaron Devine added to three points from Danny Ball sealed the win for Clan na nGael.

Ryan Mayse hit 1-10 for his team as Newtownstewart put Drumragh to the sword at Clanabogan. Shane Cleary finished with 1-5 for the Sarsfields including a late penalty which ultimately had no bearing on the final outcome of the game. After a very competitive first half Newtown reached the break 0-7 to 0-4 in front before pulling away just after the restart as Mayse drove home a great goal. Tommy Mullin quickly replied with a three pointer of his own before Damian Donnelly combined well with Michael Corless to tag on his side’s second goal on forty minutes.

Table toppers Owen Roes continued their fine unbeaten league run with a 3-17 to 0-11 win over Fintona. County man Cathal Mc Shane starred for the Glenmornan outfit registering 2-8 while Aaron Mc Carney hit 0-7 for the Pearses. Owen Roes dominated from the off and led 1-11 to 0-5 at the break before easing to a very convincing win. Michael and Seamus Dooher scored 1-5 between them for the winners while Bernard Cassidy and Mark Mc Glynn shared the remainder of Fintona’s points.

Glenelly enjoyed their biggest win of the season as they found their shooting boots against Killeeshil. Ronan O’Kane hit 1-3 for the winners while Seamus Harkin (6), Eamon Mc Connell (5) and Colm Hicks (3) were on target for the winners while Rory Mc Cann (1-0), Pascal Donaghy (0-3), Ruairi O’Neill (0-2) and Conall Monaghan (0-1) did the scoring for the St. Marys.

Derrytresk registered a convincing win over an understrength Drumquin side on Sunday. An impressive first half saw them reach the break 2-8 to 1-3 up. Liam Slater and Ronan O’Neill found the net for the winners while Sean Mc Donagh hit the Wolfe Tones goal. Cathal O’Neill landed six points for the Hillmen while Liam Slater also knocked over four points. Eamon Teague (3), Frankie Mc Alynn (2) and Barry Gormley (2) accounted for most of their team’s points.

It was with deep regret that we in TTM learned of the death of Seamus Horisk on Friday evening.  Seamus was a hugely significant figure not only in and around the Errigal Ciaran club but in the wider world of Tyrone GAA.  The suddenness of his passing came as a shock to all the GAA family throughout Tyrone.  Seamus always took time out to chat to us about all things GAA and you always knew where you stood with him in terms of his loyalty to his club and county.  We will miss him greatly and extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and community.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anam
