Honours Even Between Aghaloo And Dungannon

$

Dungannon travelled to Aghaloo on Monday evening as favourites for the two league points but they needed two late scores to secure a hard earned 2-14 to 3-11 draw. Aghaloo led 2-6 to 2-5 at halftime with Niall McElroy and Ruairi McGlone getting their goals. McElroy and Conor Mullen tagged on second half points but with Dalaigh Jones, Naoise Martin and Padraig McNulty getting goals it was anybody’s game with Patrick Molloy popping up with an injury time equaliser for the Clarkes.

GAA Handball News

Tyrone GAA Handball dominated the 2017 Ulster GAA Handball Wallball Championships in Loughmacrory and following all the weekend action it was Breacach’s Conor McElduff, who returned from a 10 month spell on the sidelines to produce a series of almost flawless displays to power his way to top honours at the event, the Ulster Mens open title.

McElduff was a 15-6, 15-5 win over county colleague, Darragh Daly, in the blue ribband final after Daly had scored an eye-catching win over Armagh’s  former champion and 2017 All Ireland 40×20 Senior Champion, Charles Shanks, in the semi final by 16-12. McElduff also produced impressive form to defeat Sean Kerr and Johnny Woods on route to the final.

Of the 14 titles on offer, Tyrone GAA Handball collected 8 title wins in all with 4 Ulster triumphs for Down and 2 going to Armagh.

There will now be 6 Tyrone players in total challenging for GAA Handball All Ireland Wallball Championship titles on 14th July in Mount Talbot Handball Club, Roscommon. Dara Curran (U17 Boys), Cahir Munroe (U15 Boys), Mairéad Fox (Girls U15) and Caitlin Conway (Girls U17) will contest the All Ireland Juvenile Championship grades following provincial title wins while Niall Kerr will bid to retain his Masters title following his Ulster victory again. The Tyrone winners this weekend were completed by Clare Conway in the Ladies Challenger grade and Dearbhail Fox in the Girls U13 singles event.

Both Dara Curran and Cahir Munroe were winning their second Ulster Wallball (One-Wall) championship singles titles. Curran was achieving successive title wins in the Championships, having defeated Lorcan McBride to win the Ulster Under 15 Singles Championship title twelve months ago (2016) while Cahir Munroe won the U13 singles title two years ago (2015), beating Monaghan’s Eoghan McGinnity in the final.

Indeed it is the same scenario for Mairead Fox and Caitlin Conway with Conway having won the Girls U15 title last term (2016), denying Fox in the final of that event, and Mairead Fox having won the Ulster Under 13 Singles title two years ago, in 2015. All four newly crowned Ulster Juvenile champions will certainly travel to the All Ireland Wallball Championships in just under 3 weeks time with major chances.

Ulster Wallball Championship Finals & Winners 2017

U13 Girls Final: Dearbhla Fox (Tyrone) bt Niamh Curran (Tyrone) 25-11
U13 Boys Final: Fiachra O Dhuill (Armagh) bt Gary McAleer (Tyrone) 17-13
U15 Girls Final: Mairead Fox (Tyrone) bt Caiolisa ni Dhuill (Armagh) 22-12
U15 Boys Final: Cahir Munroe (Tyrone) bt Antoin White (Down) 25-8
U17 Girls Champion: Caitlin Conway (Tyrone)
U17 Boys Final: Dara Curran (Tyrone) bt Daire Savage (Down) 27-13
Men’s Challenger Final: Eddie Mc Kevitt (Down) bt Barry Mc Cullagh (Tyrone)
Ladies Challenger Final: Clare Conway (Tyrone) bt Eilish Owens (Tyrone)
Ladies C Champion: Michelle Mc Coy (Down)
Mens C Final: Collie Turley (Down) bt Seamie Mc Crory (Tyrone) 22-14
Ladies B Final: Megan Mc Cann (Armagh) by Michelle Warren (Tyrone) 31-4
Men’s B Final: Barrie Mc Coy (Down) bt Richie Mc Nally (Down) 23-18
Masters Final: Niall Kerr (Tyrone) bt Paul Graham (Antrim) 24-11
Men’s Open Final: Conor Mc Elduff (Tyrone) bt Darragh Daly (Tyrone) 15-5, 15-6

Next up for Tyrone Handballers will be the 2017 GAA Handball Wallball Nationals…

It is certainly a big week in the Wallball calendar with the premier event coming now in the weekend ahead, in the GAA Handball Wallball Nationals. All the players mentioned already who were successful in the Ulster championships will travel to Breaffy Sports Arena in Castlebar with major opes of national glory while a host of others will also make the trip in a positive frame of mind.

Conor McElduff will be bidding to regain his Nationals Open crown when he takes to the courts again in Castlebar this weekend. He will be hoping to add to his 2014 and 2015 title wins, having been denied a 3-in-a-row in a thrilling Open decider in 2016 by Galway’s Martin Mulkerrins. Certainly it looks to be the best Mens Open field assembled since 2011 when the likes of Wally Amaro, Herman Mendez, Willie Polanco, Pee Wee Castro and players from England, Netherlands and Italy travelled to take on Irish stars such as Charly Shanks, Robbie McCarthy, James Doyle and Dessie Keegan. It may be an all-Irish Open in 2017 but the quality in the national stage in one wall handball has increased considerably with McElduff, Mulkerrins, McCarthy and Shanks at the top of the tree and a host of players such as Paudie Quish, Diarmaid Nash and Tyrone’s Darragh Daly and Johnny Woods all challenging.

Tyrone have a host of players travelling across a wide range of grades and many have very real chances of nationals gold.

Massive interest aroused ahead of 4th Annual Loughmacrory Wallball Showdown

The climax to the Wallball Tournament season will come with the Loughmacrory Wallball Showdown on the weekend of 28th to 30th July. The Tyrone club have now launched full entry an tournament information for what promises to be a spectacular social and action climax to a wonderful Wallball Season.

Puerto Rico’s former World Champion, Wally Amaro, made a 4,000 mile round trip to Loughmacrory last August and beat the very best GAA handball stars in Ireland as he collected a second Lough Showdown Mens Open Crown, having secured the inaugural title at the event back in 2014.

The return to action of two times Irish National Champion and 2015 Lough Showdown Champion, Conor McElduff, impressive 2016  Mens Open Nationals champion,Galway’s Martin MulkerrinsUS Nationals Champion, Killian Carroll, 3 times Mens Open Nationals Champion, Armagh’s Charly Shanks plus Holland’s Kees Van der Schoot are just some of the players who have challenged for the prestigious Lough Wallball Showdown crown in addition to a host of the very best handballers in Ireland.

The 4th Annual Lough One Wall Showdown will take place at the new Outdoor fully covered One Wall Handball Complex (and surrounding courts) from Friday 28th to Sunday 30th JULY 2017.

And lets not forget the brilliant line-up in the Ladies Open Showdown too – 2017 Ladies Open Champion, Lorraine Havern, will bid for the Open crown while previous two-in-a-row champion, Cork’s Catriona Casey, Holland’s Miranda Scheffer, and last year’s Open Champion, Armagh’s Megan McCann, are some of the ladies stars who have challenged for the top ladies honours.  A host of other ladies handball stars are also making the journey including the return to action of 3 times World and 12 times All Ireland Senior champion, Antrim’s Fiona Shannon in addition to brilliant all-codes handball star, Limerick’s Martina McMahon.

On Saturday night 29th July at the Tournament, there will be a Presentation Evening, Loughmacrory GAA Clubrooms as part of this highly entertaining weekend and that should also be a great occasion – and will follow on from the Mens & Ladies Open Finals – which will take place on the Saturday evening for the first time – having seen how successful this endeavour proved for the GAA Handball Nationals.

Entry Deadline is MONDAY 10th JULY 2017. This deadline will be adhered to in order to guarantee all players Tournament Tee-Shirts for the event. One-off Registration Evening for Local Players on Tuesday 11th July, 7pm at Loughmacrory One Wall Arena. Entry Fee entitles players (All Singles Grades Only) to: Entry to specified event, Refreshments for all Players on each day & Tournament Tee Shirt & Tournament Programme.

Ulster Ladies Intermediate Football Final

Clonmore 7-30pm Friday

Tyrone V Down

Tyrone and Down meet on Friday night in a repeat of last year’s Ulster intermediate final but not for these two sides the trappings of a big Ulster final day at Clones. Instead the footballers of Tyrone and Down will have to settle for the more humble surrounds of Robert Emmett Park Clonmore on a Friday.

“It’s not ideal, it takes away from the sense of occasion” claims an angry Tyrone manager Gerry Moane. “It certainly is frustrating. There’s no spectator facilities and we are told the Athletic Grounds were closed, two games though there last weekend. We were originally set to go to Silverbridge on the Down doorstep. There’s no real respect for either team.”

Last year Tyrone and Down played out an entertaining decider at St Tiernach’s Park as part of a triple bill of games. Moane feels that a Friday night game is not the best way to promote the sport but admits it’s a pitch and you have to get on with it.

Moane has had an anxious wait over several of his players ahead of the game as on-going injury worries and a suspension have left things difficult. Niamh Hughes and Emma Hegarty both picked up injuries in the club championship fixtures while Donaghmore’s Michaela McGuigan has a recurring quad injury. Hughes rolled an ankle and is now unlikely to feature. Hegarty suffered a knock to her knee but should be okay while Mc Guigan is also responding well to treatment.

Fintona’s Nichola Donnelly meanwhile is facing a four week ban after she was involed in an incident while mentoring  one of her club’s under age teams. The senior manager  made no secret that he was  frustrated by news of the ban. Club officials and County management confirmed that the matter is the subject of an appeal.

Niamh O’Neill scored 1-7 in last year’s final and picked up the player of the match award however the Sperrin Og forward picked up a knee injury several weeks ago and despite making a recent comeback to club duty remains off the pace with Moane not expected to risk further damage.

Captain Neamh Wood’s who missed the Clones outing through injury last year has only returned to action after a  week of international netball. Despite a niggle she is hopeful of playing some part in this year’s game.

Down manager Ryan McShane has drafted in a handful of new faces since last year’s four point loss but it has not been a good 2017 for the Mourne side. Down just about avoided relegation to division four, securing just a single win, that against Offaly as they struggled to find any form. That said they have plenty of quality to call on. The experienced Kyla Trainor has some fifteen years inter county experience with the highly experienced team captain Lauren Cunningham a real driving force.

Down won the All Ireland intermediate title in 2014 however only six of that squad remain in the current panel. Christine Mc Carthy should start in goal. Orla Boyle and Kate Mc Kay will be key at the back while we can expect a real ding dong battle between Shannon Quinn and Woods at midfield against  a strong Down duo that includes Laoise Duffy who at just eighteen years of age is likely to be the youngest player on the pitch.

Tyrone have plenty of quality all over the park but there’s no doubting that Down are an excellent championship team and could cause Tyrone problems.

Minor Season Reaching Business End Of Things

We are reaching the business end of things in all four grades of the club minor championships and leagues. In grade one the championship semi-final line up was completed on Wednesday night when Eglish, Errigal Ciaran, Cappagh and Killeeshil recorded wins over Kildress, Dungannon, Loughmacrory and Moortown respectively. The finalists in the grade one league will be known after this weekend with Galbally taking on Errigal Ciaran and Dungannon and Carrickmore going head to head.

In the grade two championship quarter finals Clonoe edged out neighbours Coalisland, Moy grabbed five goals in their home win over Drumragh, Newtownstewart had three points to spare over Trillick and Donaghmore won away to neighbours Rock. Three of those winning sides are in contention for a possible double but for at least one of them that will end this weekend. That is because the league semi-final pairs Donaghmore against Newtownstewart while Moy take on Trillick in the other last four clash.

In grade three Beragh proved too powerful for Brackaville while in grade four the championship final will be between Aghaloo and Derrytresk after they overcame Killyman and Fintona respectively. This weekend Beragh will hope to keep their double hopes alive when they take on Brocagh in the league semi-final while the first silverware of the season at minor level will be decided on Saturday when Derrytresk and Killyman meet in the grade four league decider.

The most successful GAA fundraising body in Ireland, Club Tyrone, has begun the process of branching out beyond its more traditional boundaries.  A small delegation led by the man that captured the Tyrone’s first All Ireland senior title in 2003 will meet with Tyrone exiles in Manhattan on 11th July.

Six time All Star Peter Canavan will speak at an event which has been organised by a small group of Tyrone natives currently resident in and around the Big Apple.  The venue for the gathering is Rattle’N’Hum West, 306 W 39th St, New York, NY 10018 and anyone with an association or an interest in Tyrone is encouraged to attend.

Club Tyrone chairman Mark Conway will introduce the Club Tyrone concept and outline how the Club Tyrone network can support the work of Tyrone people in New York and beyond.  It’s anticipated that the Club Tyrone New York branch will be formally launched in the autumn.  The New York branch isn’t the only centre expected to be operating before the end of the year.  Planning is already at an advanced stage to begin work in London and San Francisco.

Ladies Retain Ulster Title

Tyrone Ladies successfully defended their Ulster Intermediate title on Friday evening in Clonmore when they defeated Down 0-17 to 0-3.

The foundations for the win were laid during an impressive first half display that saw Gerry Moane’s side hit nine fine points. Full forward Niamh O’Neill and veteran Gemma Begley landed six between them while Aine and Maria Canavan also managed to get among the scores. Indeed Tyrone could have been even further ahead had they not taken the wrong options when well placed in front of the goals on several occasions.

Down worked very hard against the breeze in the first half but they were too reliant on the threat posed by Kyla Trainor to really trouble Tyrone whose defence was rock solid. Full back Joanne Barrett, centre half Shannon Cunningham and wing back Neamh Woods marshalled the rearguard superbly restricting Down to only a handful of chances over the course of the game.

With the wind in their backs in the second half most spectators were expecting Down to make a real game of it but it was the Red Hand girls who dominated the second period. Neamh Woods and Niamh O’Neill kept Tyrone on the front foot from the off and any chance of a Down comeback disappeared as O’Neill, Begley, Rebecca Mc Crory and Maria Canavan all added points.

The Mourne girls looked a tired side long before the end as their first half exploits caught up with them and Tyrone went on to seal a well deserved fourteen point win.

Tyrone scorers: Gemma Begley 0-7, Niamh O’Neill 0-4, Maria Canavan 0-3, Aine Canavan 0-2 and Rebecca Mc Crory 0-1.

Clogher Éire Óg’s Club Gaels embark on USA Tour

On July 6th 2017 the Clogher Éire Ógs will depart these shores for the trip of a lifetime to the USA.

A party of 24 players, management and committee members will fly from Dublin airport to JFK Airport in New York.

The nature of the trip is to take part in the official opening of Rockland GAA Clubrooms and facilities just outside Pearl River New York. The Éire Ógs will play the host club Rockland in a challenge game on Sat 9th July. The teams will compete for the Robert Mc Kieran Cup in memory of a young Rockland Gael killed tragically in a car accident some years ago.

As part of the weekend festival there will also be a special exhibition game involving All Stars/Legends – Leinster/Ulster Vs Munster/Connacht.

The Ulster panel consists of: Paddy Bradley (Derry), Henry Downey (Derry), Paul Finlay (Monaghan), Owen Mulligan (Tyrone), Brian Mc Guigan (Tyrone), Peter Canavan (Tyrone), Brian Dooher (Tyrone), Aaron Kernan (Armagh), Oisin McConville (Armagh), James McCartan (Down) and Colm McFadden (Donegal).

The Leinster panel consists of: Graham Geraghty (Meath), Matty Forde (Wexford), Andy Comerford (Kilkenny) and Martin Comerford (Kilkenny). The team manager for the Ulster/Leinster team is Brian Mullins (Dublin).

The Connacht panel consists of: Eamon O’Hara (Sligo), Ciaran McDonald (Mayo), Conor Mortimer (Mayo), Padraic Joyce (Galway), Declan Meehan (Galway) and Frankie Dolan (Roscommon).

The Munster panel consists of: Tomas O’Se (Kerry), William Kirby (Kerry), Paul Galvin (Kerry), Tommy Griffin (Kerry), Dara O’Cinneide (Kerry), Declan Browne (Tipperary), Eamonn Corcoran (Tipperary), Shane McGrath (Tipperary), Sean Og O’hAlpin (Cork) and Ken McGrath (Waterford). The team manager for Connacht/Munster is Billy Morgan (Cork).

Officiating the match will be All Ireland referee, Pat McEnaney.

The GAA President Aoghan O’Farrell will be on hand to officially open the new facilities as well as numerous other gaels from all over Ireland and the USA.

Speaking ahead of the trip club secretary Eugene Mc Connell stated “The trip has been in the planning for almost a year and everyone is looking forward to representing the club and our county at this important event for Rockland GAA.”

“We have a strong tie with Rockland in that our former clubman and senior player Brian Pearson is one of the key drivers within the Rockland Club and what was only an idea 12 months ago suddenly became a reality and all the travelling party has self financed the trip. It is an historic occasion for our club and we hope to do ourselves proud.”

The Rockland Club is made up of many former Tyrone men who are now domiciled in the USA, such as club chairman Matty Mc Kenna and Emmett Woods both staunch Pomeroy men. They are a very progressive club and provide not only football, hurling plus camogie and ladies football at all levels. They have also just recently employed a full time Development Officer to help coach and look after all aspects of GAA development within their club.

The Clogher Gaels have been very lucky to receive some welcome sponsorship from the Mellon Country Inn and New York based company SSC Highrise Construction Company.  They have very kindly come on board to sponsor club gear which the travelling party will wear during their trip to the USA.

In the photo company owners Michael and Timmy Mahoney who also recently bought over the Mellon Country Inn hand over a sponsorship cheque to club secretary Eugene Mc Connell.

Also in the photo are Gemma Mahoney Duty Manager at the Mellon Country Inn plus Patrick Mahoney and Sam Mullan.

The week long trip will provide some lasting memories and help build up some new friendships. The strong Tyrone connections living in Pearl River will no doubt provide a warm welcome for all the Éire Ógs.

Owen Roes held their annual Primary School Blitz last Thursday. On a chilly evening, Fermanagh, under the guidance of coaches Tara Donaghey and Gemma Coyle, edged out Galway, who were managed by coaching officer Paul Phillips. The Erne County just got the better of a brilliant Galway team that had entertained the crowds all evening, in a superb final full of everything that is good about Gaelic Football.

Club Captain Brendan Boggs made the presentation of the Cup to the winning side, captained by Zach Boyle.
The Owen Roes primary school blitz, organised this year by youth officer Stephen Kelly, is the Club’s annual end of term GAA celebration which is open to all P4 to P7 pupils at the Club’s catchment schools or any player that attends Club underage coaching.

Cavanagh Injury Concern For Tyrone

Tyrone manager Mickey Harte will be waiting anxiously for news on Colm Cavanagh after the Moy man went off injured in the early stages of their club league game with Cookstown this afternoon. The big midfielder sustained a knee injury and as soon as he was taken off he had an ice pack put on it. With only two weeks to go to the Ulster final with Down at Clones it’s a scare that the defending Provincial champions could do without.

Fintona Pearses launched their annual club golf competition on Monday and even by the standards of a club that knows how to come up with original ideas, this one was a bit special.

The club is celebrating its centenary this year which in itself is a hugely significant milestone. However to make it even more noteworthy the club has come up with a highly original format for their competition and has chosen The Michaela Foundation as the main beneficiary.

The main sponsors of the event Tyrone Fabrication were represented by Aaron and Anton Mc Dermott. Also in attendance for the launch were All Ireland winners Peter Canavan and Greg Blaney of Down, Tyrone manager  Mickey Harte and Pat Mc Atee Chairman of Fintona Pearses.

Each team of four will consist of three local golfers plus one celebrity All Ireland winner from either Football or Hurling. The Celtic Cross Three Man competition will see twenty six teams out on the Fintona course on the 23rd of September and is sure to be a hugely successful event.

Prior to the competition the club will host a special draw to determine which All Ireland Celtic Cross winners will line out with the various teams of local players. That will be held in the club house at Fintona Golf Club on Friday the 15th of September and will be broadcast live on Teamtalkmag radio.

We wish the club and The Michaela Foundation every success in their endeavours and look forward to keeping you updated on its progress.
