Tyrone 1-21 Donegal 1-12
Reigning champions Tyrone are back in the Ulster final and they did it in style by completely outplaying Donegal at St.Tiernach’s Park in Clones in sweltering heat before an attendance of 22, 609.
In the build up to the game most people thought that it would be another close, hard fought struggle with scores difficult to come by but nothing could have been further from the truth. On a day when Mickey Harte’s charges had a dozen different scorers this new revamped Donegal side got a harsh lesson in championship football. All but two of Tyrone’s scores came from play and after leading 0-12 to 0-5 at the break Tiernan McCann’s early second half goal ended the game as a contest. The nine point winning margin in no way flattered the Red Hands as they produced an outstanding team display with Padraig Hampsey, Tiernan McCann, Peter Harte, Colm Cavanagh, Kieran McGeary, Niall Sludden, Mattie Donnelly and Sean Cavanagh worthy of special mention.
Donegal led early on 0-4 to 0-2 thanks to a brace each from Michael Murphy and Paddy McBrearty, David Mulgrew and Donnelly on target for the Red Hands. Mark Bradley and Harte had Tyrone level by the 15th minute before the winners really cut loose. McCann and Martin Reilly traded points before Sludden gave Tyrone a lead that they were never to lose in the 25th minute. That was the beginning of a purple patch for the Ulster champions with Hampsey, Harte, McGeary, Sludden and Hampsey again all weighing in with points straight out of the top drawer. A Sean Cavanagh free in injury time was Tyrone’s only score not from play and you knew that something special was on the cards as they were just one point behind their entire total from last season’s Ulster final. In that first half both side’s created good goal chances with Donegal keeper Mark Anthony McGinley denying Sean Cavanagh while Eoin McHugh screwed his shot badly wide when straight through.
Three minutes into the second half it was all over bar the shouting when good work from the impressive Ronan McNamee set up McCann and he did the rest with a fine finish to the back of the Donegal net. McBrearty and Bradley exchanged points before Donnelly bombed over another score from forty metres out. McGeary then got his second of the afternoon and his third followed sixty seconds later when he cut in from the left wing to fist over.
McBrearty and Murphy both scored from placed balls but the excellent Sludden carved through the Donegal defence on a fifty metre run to register again. Micheal Carroll did get in for a Donegal goal but it wasn’t even a consolation score as Tyrone continued to hit the target through substitutes Declan McClure and Ronan O’Neill. Hughie McFadden and McBrearty had late Donegal points but either side of those scores keeper Niall Morgan floated over a “45” on a terrific afternoon for Tyrone.
