Junior Football Championship

Edendork 2-5 Trillick 4-9

Stewartstown 1-2 Rock 4-11

Beragh 1-5 Moy 2-11

Trillick, Moy and Rock advanced to the quarter finals of the junior football championship as a busy week of championship football continued in the County. Louise Mc Carney bagged a hat-trick of goals as Trillick eased past Edendork at Augher. County defender Emma Brennan set the wheels in motion with the Reds first attack when she fired home a goal as the ball was worked forward straight from the throw in. Maeve Maxwell hit a first half goal for the St Malachy’s.

3-6 to 1-3 up at the break Trillick kept the scoreboard ticking over in the second half with Dearbhle Gallagher, Shannon Gray and Brennan tagging on points with McCarney completing her hat trick. Edendork rallied through the second half but Edel Gray and Cathy Donnelly were assured at the back. Brennan exceptional through the middle, indeed she was unlucky not to add to her first half goal late on.

Rock were too strong for a youthful Stewartstown while Moy turned up the heat in the second half to get past a very hardworking Beragh at Carrickmore. It finished 2-11 to 1-5 as Moy upped the tempo.

The remaining preliminary game in the junior grade between Castlederg and Clonoe is set for Killyclogher on Sunday evening at 8pm.

Intermediate Football Championship

Cappagh 3-6  Fr Rocks 2-13

As expected the fixture of the prelims produced an exceptional game of football at Plunkett Park this week with division two league leaders Fr Rocks living up to their favourites tag as they edged out Cappagh. The Ballinamullan girls made no secret of the fact that they had an eye on a league and championship double and produced a sterling display in this tie.

The Cookstown side led 2-9 to 2-2 by the break, Annie Nugent and Emma Coyle with the Fr Rocks goals, yet as Aoibhinn Devlin also tagged on points it was Cappagh who played some great second half football. The Cappagh goals, a brace from Aishling Porter and Terri McCusker kept them in touch and as the tie wore on there was little between the teams.

Clodagh Poyntz, county minor Caitlin Kelly and Donna Donnelly closed the gap with points while Noleen Garland had an excellent outing at the back. Fr Rocks were wasteful at times with several scoring chances sent wide. Laura McGillion went close although at the other end Caoimhe Meeke made several fine saves and Lauren McCrory defended well to deny Cappagh as the Cookstown side progressed.

Donaghmore 5-16  Dromore 1-8

St Patrick’s progressed to a quarter final in the Intermediate championship and a meeting with Aghyaran without much resistance from a Dromore side who were well off the pace at Pairc Colmcille. Rebecca McCrory hit an excellent 1-8 for Donaghmore who turned in a very controlled performance over the hour although they were rarely troubled.

To their credit though the St Dympna’s tried hard to unlock a well drilled Donaghmore defence. Shauna McNabb was excellent and Emma Smyth hit six points for the Gardrum Park outfit although Aishing Hegarty, McCrory, Emma Hegarty and Nicola McCrystal were all on top form for Donaghmore.

Helen McAleer and McCrory scored first half goals with scoring contributions over the thirty minutes from Emma Hegarty, Ashley Colton and Beth Moore. Donaghmore led 2-12 to 1-3 by half time, McNabb with the Dromore goal and despite plenty of commitment from Dromore in the second half they could not reel St Patricks in.

Moore, Hegarty and Lynn McCrory added further goals as the game headed to its inevitable conclusion.

Derry 3-17 Antrim 0-10

Derry experienced little difficulty in making it through to the Electric Ireland Ulster minor final when they produced an impressive display to beat a gallant but outplaying Antrim side at Clones on Sunday afternoon.

It took the young Saffrons twenty six minutes to open their account and by that stage the writing was already on the wall and by the interval the winners had built up a commanding 1-10 to 0-3 advantage. To their credit Antrim kept battling away and they closed the gap in the second half but two further goals in the closing eight minutes helped give Derry a deserved if flattering victory.

Patrick Quigg opened the scoring inside sixty seconds and in the 4th minute Derry were awarded a penalty which was converted by full back Conor McCluskey. Ben McCarron added two points with Richie Mullan and McCarron again on target to leave it 1-5 to 0-0. Dermot McErlaine then opened Antrim’s account from a placed ball but Derry responded with efforts from Declan Cassidy, Quigg, Oisin McWilliams and Mark McGrogan. Substitute Ruairi Brolly and Liam Quinn had Antrim points but Derry had the final say of the opening period through a long range Oisin McWilliams free.

Antrim substitute Seanchan Duffin blasted over an early second half goal chance before Derry replacements Tiarnan McHugh and Fergal Mortimer both found the range seconds after their introduction. McErlaine and three Ronan Kelly points closed the gap to 1-12 to 0-8 but Derry always looked the likely winners.

In the 22nd minute Derry carved open the Antrim defence for McWilliams to palm the ball to the net from close range and after Ben McCarron and Mortimer had tagged on points McWilliams got his second major of the afternoon. It was all Derry and while Malachi Doherty had the final say of the contest for Antrim it was only academic at that stage.

Derry – Oran Hartin, Oran McGill, Conor McCluskey, Sean McKeever, Simon McErlain, Dara Rafferty, Conleth McShane, Padraig McGrogan, Oisin McWilliams, Patrick Quigg, Richie Mullan, Declan Cassidy, Ben McCarron, Lorcan McWilliams, Mark McGrogan. Subs – Tiarnan McHugh for Mark McGrogan, Fergal Mortimer for Quigg, Cormac Murphy for Mullan, Callum Brown for Cassidy, Martin Bradley for McErlain, Tiarnan Walsh for Oisin McWilliams

Tyrone 1-21 Donegal 1-12

Reigning champions Tyrone are back in the Ulster final and they did it in style by completely outplaying Donegal at St.Tiernach’s Park in Clones in sweltering heat before an attendance of 22, 609.

In the build up to the game most people thought that it would be another close, hard fought struggle with scores difficult to come by but nothing could have been further from the truth. On a day when Mickey Harte’s charges had a dozen different scorers this new revamped Donegal side got a harsh lesson in championship football. All but two of Tyrone’s scores came from play and after leading 0-12 to 0-5 at the break Tiernan McCann’s early second half goal ended the game as a contest. The nine point winning margin in no way flattered the Red Hands as they produced an outstanding team display with Padraig Hampsey, Tiernan McCann, Peter Harte, Colm Cavanagh, Kieran McGeary, Niall Sludden, Mattie Donnelly and Sean Cavanagh worthy of special mention.

Donegal led early on 0-4 to 0-2 thanks to a brace each from Michael Murphy and Paddy McBrearty, David Mulgrew and Donnelly on target for the Red Hands. Mark Bradley and Harte had Tyrone level by the 15th minute before the winners really cut loose. McCann and Martin Reilly traded points before Sludden gave Tyrone a lead that they were never to lose in the 25th minute. That was the beginning of a purple patch for the Ulster champions with Hampsey, Harte, McGeary, Sludden and Hampsey again all weighing in with points straight out of the top drawer. A Sean Cavanagh free in injury time was Tyrone’s only score not from play and you knew that something special was on the cards as they were just one point behind their entire total from last season’s Ulster final. In that first half both side’s created good goal chances with Donegal keeper Mark Anthony McGinley denying Sean Cavanagh while Eoin McHugh screwed his shot badly wide when straight through.

Three minutes into the second half it was all over bar the shouting when good work from the impressive Ronan McNamee set up McCann and he did the rest with a fine finish to the back of the Donegal net. McBrearty and Bradley exchanged points before Donnelly bombed over another score from forty metres out. McGeary then got his second of the afternoon and his third followed sixty seconds later when he cut in from the left wing to fist over.

McBrearty and Murphy both scored from placed balls but the excellent Sludden carved through the Donegal defence on a fifty metre run to register again. Micheal Carroll did get in for a Donegal goal but it wasn’t even a consolation score as Tyrone continued to hit the target through substitutes Declan McClure and Ronan O’Neill. Hughie McFadden and McBrearty had late Donegal points but either side of those scores keeper Niall Morgan floated over a “45” on a terrific afternoon for Tyrone.

Subs: Darren McCurry for Bradley (BC, 45), Rory Brennan for Mulgrew (47), Declan McClure for C McCann (51), Ronan O’Neill for S Cavanagh (57), Cathal McShane for McGeary (57), Justin McMahon for Harte (70).

DONEGAL: Mark Anthony McGinley; Paddy McGrath, Neil McGee, Eoghan Ban Gallagher; Ryan McHugh, Frank McGlynn, Eamonn Doherty; Jason McGee, Ciaran Thompson; Michael Carroll, Martin Reilly, Jamie Brennan; Patrick McBrearty, Michael Murphy, Eoin McHugh. Junior Championship

Castlederg 3-8 Clonoe 4-8

Castlederg’s wonderful second half resurgence just failed to save them from a championship exit at the hands of a quality Clonoe side at Killyclogher on Sunday evening as a busy week of championship football came to a close with a cracker in the summer sun.

The O’Rahily’s powered into a first half lead after Roisin Devlin’s early Derg goal had opened the night’s scoring. Last year’s beaten league and championship finalists fell away after that and by eighteen minutes Clonoe led 1-5 to 1-1, Claire McAliskey getting the goal with Brona Mc Oscar and Doloris McCabe among the points. By the break the east Tyrone girls looked to have this tie wrapped up with goals from Sinead Hanna, McCabe and Mc Aliskey as Castlederg wasted several chances at the other end. At half time Clonoe found themselves in a strong position leading 4-6 to 1-4.

A stirring fightback was needed and to be fair Castlederg delivered just that.  Marisa Lynch rattled in an early goal to give the girls in red and black a fighting chance. Roisin Devlin ran through to bag her second and the Derg’s third goal to leave just two points between the sides. Points from Louise Coyle, Shannon Lynch and Laura Mc Sorley  had helped in the recovery.

Clonoe missed several chances to steady the ship but crucial points from McOscar and the impressive Hanna kept their noses just in front and they edged over the line by three.

Both teams deserve great credit after serving up a real treat with excellent defending and some quality finishing the order of the day. Sadly for the Derg girls it was another case of so near and yet so far and heartbreak once again.

History was made in Tyrone this evening as two new clubs played their opening games in official competition within Tyrone. The young hurlers of Tulach Óg and Cúchulainn’s clashed with Omagh and Eoghan Ruadh respectively in the opening round of the Under 12 hurling league and both sides gave an excellent account of themselves on a field evening for the small ball game. TTM wishes everyone involved with both clubs every success in the weeks, months and year ahead.

Cavan Book Final Spot

Cavan and Down produced a top level contest in Saturday’s Electric Ireland Ulster Minor semi final at The Athletic Grounds before the Breffni men emerged narrow 0-15 to 2-7 winners.

In a low scoring but exciting first half Cavan struggled to find their rhythm. Their chances were not helped when they lost towering midfielder Ronan Patterson to a black card in the sixteenth minute. As Cavan sought to regroup Down dominated the play and goals from Ruairi Mc Crickard and Liam Kerr helped put the Mourne men in the driving seat. Shane Arnett and Conor Clarke’s driving runs created numerous chances for the men in red and black as Cavan failed to capitalise on their possession and found themselves trailing 2-2 to 0-2 with eight first half minutes remaining.

Oisin Pierson and James Smith were the only Cavan men to find the target in that opening twenty plus minutes. However they were given hope just before the break with scores from Patrick Lynch and midfielder Smith again closed the gap to four points.

Cavan were a much improved team after the break with Cian Madden and Philip Rogers impressive on the ball but the star of the second half was big midfielder James Smith who gave an exhibition of high fielding and direct running. His display more than anything else helped turn the game for Cavan and inspired his team mates to run themselves into the ground in search of victory.

Down managed only five second half points with two of those coming in the closing minutes as Cavan hit eleven fine second half scores. Cian Madden and Oisin Pierson hit seven points between them while full forward Patrick Lynch’s five points proved crucial in the outcome of the game.

After drawing level on the fortieth minute Cavan, inspired by midfield colossus Smith, kept Down at arm’s length showing considerable composure particularly in the closing minutes. Pierson, Madden, Lynch and Rogers produced heroics at times as the Breffni Blues deservedly made it through to a clash with Derry in the Ulster final on July 16th.

Scorers:

Cavan: Patrick Lynch 0-5, Oisin Pierson 0-4, Cian Madden 0-3, James Smith 0-2, Sean Keogan 0-1

Down: Liam Kerr 1-1, Ruairi Mc Crickard 1-0, Conor Mc Crickard 0-3, Declan Mc Clements 0-1, Ruairi Mc Cormack 0-1, Aaron Gribben 0-1

Piaras Mc Sorley, Niall and Ryan Mayse got the first half scores for the winners. Most of the excitement however was reserved for the closing minutes that saw Clogher bag their second goal to move 2-7 to 0-9 in front. However an Aidan Mc Sorley point and 1-2 in injury time from Ryan Mayse secured the win for Newtownstewart.

New York Crowned Feile Champions

The national Féile ended today with history being made by the New York team when they lifted the division one national Féile football title. Having won their league section with a bit to spare on each occasion, there were mixed emotions in the quarter final for Ardboe man Mickey Coleman when New York were paired against his own club. Mickey was part of a very formidable New York management team and the quarter final ended with a win against a hard working and typically brave Ardboe team. With a place in the semi final assured, New York had to face Mayo champions Castlebar who gave a very good account of themselves but lost out eventually by 2-8 to 1-5. It was evident to most people that this New York team were probably one of the best ever prepared teams to take part in Féile and the meticulous preparations were there for all to see in the final as New York put on a power packed display against Laois champions, Portaloise running out easy winners on a scoreline of 3-7 to 0-2 which resulted in scenes of great joy and celebrations.

The New York team were simply a joy to watch through the entire weekend. Technically New York were brilliant and the discipline of the team was of the highest order and were a credit to their clubs, families and coaches and to the GAA.

They say that behind every great team is an even better backroom team and without doubt this is the case here again. New York selected their backroom team well and it is no fluke that this New York team arrived having been prepared for every eventuality. Joining Mickey Coleman were men from Kerry, Monaghan and Meath. So you just knew with that combination that the New York team were going to be a force to be reckoned with in the competition.

From a Tyrone perspective it would be remiss of us not to give special mention to Ardboe man Mickey Coleman who, when he isn’t busy in his successful and expanding Shoreline Contracts company, spends his spare time coaching kids to play Gaelic football as well as being one of the main promoters of Irish music and song in the New York music scene. Mickey has been a resident of New York for the past number of years and the transition from the shores of Lough Neagh to New York has been a very smooth and successful one, both on and off the pitch. Mickey left Ardboe to make a new life in New York as a very decorated player having won numerous titles, medals and accolades during a very illustrious, rewarding and memorable career with school, club and county. 1998 was the year that saw a young and hungry Mickey Coleman win a coveted O’Neill Cup medal as he defied his youth and inexperience by lining out in the middle of the park to drive Ardboe to O’Neill cup glory, the last occasion Ardbó annexed the title. However even more recognition and fame was to arrive as Coleman’s exploits in the orange and blue of Ardboe as a teak tough, skilful, versatile player and naturally gifted fielder of the ball,   led Tyrone manager Mickey Harte to invite Coleman to be part of the Tyrone panel in 2003 and as they say the rest is history. Coleman’s name will forever be written in the history books as he was part of the Tyrone team that won the first ever Sam Maguire in September of that year.

Undoubtedly Mickey has brought his wealth of playing experience to bear on this New York Féile team, alongside the other members of the management team.

Speaking after the tournament Mickey paid tribute to the team and everyone involved : “ I just want to thank everyone who made this possible. I don’t want to start naming names as you can get yourself in trouble by doing so, but I want to pay tribute to the players who were simply magnificent when we coached them at home in New York in preparation for the Féile and who excelled when they arrived in Ireland. I want to thank sincerely New York GAA and all the clubs in New York and I want to commend each and every person in the clubs for their commitment to the promotion of Gaelic games. The parents have all been a credit and it’s just reward for their commitment to the team and thanks as well to everyone who helped fund the trip deserves special praise. And finally I want to pay tribute to the management who have been an honour to work with. There’s nothing these men haven’t done and wouldn’t do for the team and I just wish to thank Sean Price and the lads ( Patrick Mulvihill, Paul Moore and Paddy Curtis ) for allowing me to be part of it. ”

Mickey went on to describe what it is like being Irish in New York. “People think we pay lip service to being Irish in the USA – people see the green beer and the Saint Patrick’s day parade and they think that’s it. Well I can tell you that we live it 365 days of the year. We are as Irish if not more Irish than those in Ireland. We are all proud Irish men and women and our culture means everything to us and winning this title for New York GAA is something we’ll never forget and let’s hope that these lads will come through to play for New York at senior level.”

Mickey also thanked the GAA for facilitating the trip to Ireland : “I want to pay tribute to the GAA themselves for their promotion of the competition and for inviting teams from outside of Ireland to compete in it. ”

Mickey had special praise for his own club and county for the welcome they received “It was simply brilliant coming home for the competition. Everywhere you go in the world, everyone asks you where you are from and I don’t hesitate to say that I am a very proud Ardboe man and a very proud Tyrone man. I wore both the orange and blue and the red and white jersies with pride. Ardboe hosted us and I have to say that we were all taken aback by the exceptional welcome that was afforded to us. I am a very proud Ardboe man tonight and I know that everyone in Ardbó wishes me well and that they are extremely proud of my achievements. Ardboe had a good team and it is clear they are working hard, having had great success in the recent past with back to back minor titles and it’s great to see so many of those lads now playing at adult level with distinction for the club. Hopefully we’ll see similar success return soon and having seen the quality of the players at underage level in the club, I would be very hopeful that we can continue to be a major force at all levels. I had to try and go one better this week than big brother Shane who is heavily involved in the club and who led the Ardboe Féile team to the final in 2015 in Wexford. Tyrone GAA also deserve special mention as well my old buddy Peter Canavan in Holy Trinity School Cookstown. We played Peter’s team on Wednesday and it was a really tough test which is exactly what we needed. Tyrone GAA gave us a very warm welcome and we will be doing all we can in New York to ensure that the new Club Tyone New York initiative is a success as the hospitality afforded to us by Tyrone GAA was outstanding. ”

The attention to detail of this New York team has been second to none and it is no accident that they have won the entire competition. The team was afforded the very best of everything the fact that the team based in New York brushed aside most teams was testament to the coaching ability of the lads who prepared and coached the team over the course of the past number of months.

Well done to New York who were worthy winners of the grade one title. Enjoy the celebrations and with Mickey Coleman and his management team promoting Gaelic games and culture in New York, it is safe to say that GAA is in a very healthy state and with Mickey, Sean Price, Patrick Mulvihill, Paul Moore and Paddy Curtis and men like them at the helm, the day when New York win a senior championship match is no doubt getting closer and closer and the dream will become a reality.

Coalisland played host to Ardboe at Father Campbell Park on Monday evening when a late rally saw them emerge narrow 1-13 to 1-12 winners.  It was the Rossas who shaded the first half 0-8 to 0-7 with Nishy O’Neill, Gavin Teague, Brian Toner and Plunkett Kane among the points for their respective sides. Peter O’Neill then got a goal early in the second half and when Shay McGuigan and Kyle Coney added points the Loughshore men looked set for victory. Coalisland though rallied with points from Toner and Paddy McNeice as well as an Eoghan Hampsey goal to win the day.
