There were wins this evening for Dromore and Omagh in their senior championship first round games. Dromore produced a superb display to dispense with Killyclogher on a score line of 1-12 to 0-8. The sides were level at 0-2 apiece after 12 minutes but Dromore showed all their experience and quality in the next ten minutes to open up a six point lead. Ciaran Mc Coy’s seventeenth minute goal put his side comfortably in control that even at that early stage put the game beyond their opponents.
Sean O’Neill, Ryan Mc Menamin, Sean Mc Donnell, Ronan Mc Nabb and Eoin Mc Cusker were outstanding for the winners who qualified for a quarter final clash with Friday night’s winning Clonoe side. That game promises to be quite a thriller going by what we have seen of the two sides thus far in the championship.
Following that Omagh and Coalisland served up an exciting hour’s football before St Endas recovered from being four behind to win by two. Omagh got off to a great start with Conor Clarke’s ninth minute goal putting them three clear. The Tyrone defender was later to suffer a serious knee injury which forced him from the field and makes his participation in the remainder of the championship most unlikely.
Coalisland recovered from their shaky start to reach the break one in front and extended their lead with a Brian Toner goal early in the second half. Both sides swapped scores but when the Fianna moved four clear midway through the second half it seemed they were destined to make it through to face Eglish in the last eight.
However Omagh were far from finished and with Barry Tierney and Diarmuid Kerr impressive at the back and Connor Starrs busy in the middle of the field they managed to close the gap. Ronan O’Neill and Conor O’Donnell hit five late points between them to edge an exciting game 1-15 to 1-13.
