Saturday saw the first draw in this year’s Hunky Dorys championship weekend when Aghyaran and Gortin could not be separated at Strabane in their Intermediate first round clash.
The North Tyrone side had looked the most likely winners throughout as they capitalised on an early Sean Byrne goal. However they were forced to play three quarters of the game with fourteen men following a straight red card for Brian Mc Hugh in the first half. In spite of this the St Davog’s reached the break leading 1-7 to 0-6 with Aidan Connolly and Caolan Dolan scoring five points between them. Chris Mc clean with 0-3 was Gortin’s scorer in chief during the opening half.
Aghyaran remained in control after the break in spite of the best efforts of Diarmaid Mc Nulty and Kevin Mossey. However Gortin launched a late surge as the game’s additional four minutes ticked away and when Brian Mc Garvey put them in front with less than a minute remaining the St Patrick’s looked set for a surprise win. However Aghyaran rallied again and Caolan Dolan ensured there would be a replay as he drew the sides level with virtually the last kick of the game.
Final score Agyaran 1-10, Gortin 0-13.
