The opening round in the minor club championship took place on Wednesday night with action in all three grades and once again there was some superb football served up. The tie of the round took place at Father Campbell Park between Coalisland and Moortown and it certainly lived up to its billing with the Loughshore lads winning a cracking encounter on a 2-18 to 3-12 score line.
Full forward Conan McLernon top scored for the St.Malachys with a dozen points to his name with eight of those coming from play while Shane McKeown and Jack McGuigan got their goals and Chris McGuigan and Tiernan Corr played well in their defence. Sean Corr [1-4], Cormac O’Hagan [2], Tiernan Duffy [2], Gerard Quinn [2], Michael McKernan and Gavin Graham were among the scorers for the Fianna on a night when Corr and McKernan were their best players.
Carrickmore and Stewartstown will have to do it all over again after they fought out a thrilling 0-15 to 2-9 draw. Shay Devlin [4], Macaulay Quinn [4], Darren Devlin [3], Mark O’Neill [2], Gerard O’Neill and Shay Burke were the scorers for the Harps on a night when Nathan McNally, Mark Rooney, Darren Devlin, Steven Talbot, Macaulay Quinn, Callan Burke, Shay O’Neill and Shay Devlin all played well for them. Conor Loughran got both goals for the home side and along with Aidan Fullerton, Ronan Grogan, Ciaran Daly and Conan McElduff they were the best players for the St.Colmcilles.
Holders Ardboe are through to the quarter final thanks to a hard earned 1-11 to 0-9 victory over Clonoe at Coney Park. With the wind at their backs the O’Rahillys led at the break with Eoin Teague and Fintan McClure among their points. In the second half though the Rossas were the better side with man of the match David Mulgrew hitting a number of points before Aidan O’Neill sealed victory with a late goal.
Derrylaughan were resounding winners at home to Omagh B with Tomas Carney [11], Paul Donnelly [8], James Donnelly [7], Brian Kennedy [1-4], Jarlath Canavan [1-0], Aidan Gervin [1], Shane Crew [1] and Cealon Hughes [1] the marksmen for the Kevin Barrys. Declan McNulty proved to be the Dromore hero as he hit an equalising free late on before landing a placed ball from forty five metres out as they edged past Moy 1-13 to 3-6 on a night when they had good displays as well from Brendan O’Neill in defence and Callum Ward in midfield, McNulty with the goal in the first half. It was tough on a Moy side who came perilously close to winning the game. Eoin Hughes, Francie Kelly and Rory Magee were their goal scorers with Declan Conroy hitting all but one of their points.
Newtownstewart were 2-10 to 0-10 winners away to Owen Roes with Aidan McSorley [6], Daryl McGuigan [1-1], Conor Traynor [1-0], Michael Coreless, Patrick Hargan and Eoin Donnelly their scorers with McSorley, Jake McHugh, Traynor, Piaras McNamee, Donnelly and Barney Comber all to the fore. Eglish had a comfortable win away to Kildress with Joseph McVeigh and Kevin Muldoon both playing well for them with Enda McAleer, Mattie McGuigan, Darren O’Kane and Shane McNally on target for the Wolfe Tones.
Tattyreagh were in fine scoring form as they eased past the challenge of Killeeshil. James Darcy [2-5], John McAleer [2-1], Johnny Harkin [3], Joe Cartin [2], Mark Gilloway [1-0], Niall McDonagh [1-0], Brian Callaghan [2], Eoghan Murray [2], Peadar Mullan, Jarlath McDonagh, Niall Murray and Fergal Armstrong all scored for them with strong performances coming from Mullan, Harkin, McAleer and Armstrong. Castlederg were another side who had a big win when they proved too strong for Brackaville. Paddy Porter [2-4], Padraig Keyes [2-0], Tommy McMenamin [1-2], Brandon Lynch [1-1], Conor Harper [3], Darren Traynor [1], Ben McGrath [1] and Matthew Traynor [1] were their scorers with good performances coming from Connor Logue, Padraig Keyes and Paddy Porter.
Cookstown got the better of Aghaloo on a 3-13 to 2-13 scoreline with great performances coming from Dean Teague [1-8], Justy Bloomer, Aidy Doyle, Ronan Donnelly, keeper Aaron Ridewood and team captain Christopher McNicholl. James Larmour and Dylan Coyle were the other Father Rocks goal scorers on the night. Fintona were 5-12 to 1-10 winners over Glenelly with Sonny McDonagh [2-2], Eoin Keenan [1-1], Marius Monaghan [1-2], C Starrs [1-4], Mark McGylinn, M McCloughan and I Clark the Pearses scorers. Shane Devine and Kevin McBride were Glenelly’s best players on the night.
Aghyaran and into the next round after winning a thriller at home to Edendork. With five minutes to go a penalty from Ciaran Hughes put the visitors four in front but the St.Davogs came straight down the field to win a spot kick of their own which Brian Penrose converted. Cahir Moss then levelled matters before Ciaran McGlinchey scored a dramatic winner as it finished 2-12 to 3-8. McGlinchey and Penrose scored 1-2 each for the winners with Moss [2], Benny Gallen [2], Jonathan Connolly [2] and defensive duo Jamie Hegarty and Ryan Hilley their other scorers. Hughes and Paul Donaghy finished with 1-2 each for the St.Malachys, Jordan Lavery got their other goal with Emmet Hughes [2], Odhran Donnelly and Mark McGonigle their other marksmen.
