Errigal Ciaran were certainly put to the pin of their collars by the Down champions at Dunmoyle on Sunday but in a frenetic closing spell they turned in a remarkable defensive display to secure their place in the Ulster final against Clann Eireann next weekend with a point to spare. A hugely entertaining game of football went down to the wire after a rare slip allowed Carryduff in for a fifty third minute goal to set up a tense finish. There had been six points in it at one stage.
The Tyrone champions had led 0-10 to 1-3 at the break as a late goal from Carryduff full forward Leah Beattie offered them a lifeline after Errigal had dominated proceedings. The impressive Elle Mc Namee tagged on some superb scores for the hosts, Maria Canavan was deadly accurate once again while Enya Donnelly, Michaela Moore and Aoife Quinn were also on target as Errigal built a head of steam to lead by six on the twenty four minute mark.
Carryduff relied on the high ball into Michelle Magee but with Cloideach Donaghy in top form the Down girls got little change out of Errigal until that opportune Beattie goal.
The second half was a blistering battle, some quality passages of play and it was score for score until Swail swept the ball past Eimear Corrigan with seven minutes of normal time left. Magee’s high ball wasn’t dealt with and Swail was in the right place. Mc Namee replied with a great Errigal point to leave it a two point game again.
In a frantic closing spell Corrigan made two great stops as Donaghy, the hard working Meabh Corrigan and Saorla Mullan defended with a calm maturity. Carryduff threw everything at them yet all they had to show for their efforts was a Magee free as time ran out and the Tyrone champions made it through.
