An injury time goal from Donegal man Ryan McHugh proved to be the winning score as Martin McHugh and Benny Hurl’s UUJ overcome Donegal in the opening round of the Dr McKenna Cup. A superb piece of build up play from Pomeroy man Frank Burns put McHugh in for the goal.
Donegal got off to a decent start in the game thanks to first half goals from Eoghan Bán Gallagher and Micheál Carroll. Donegal had Brendan McCole to thank for their third goal while Ethan O’Donnell found the net with their fourth towards the end of the game.
Trillick’s Daire Gallagher slotted UUJ’s first goal after a pass from Aghaloo man Ruairi McGlone. Paddy McBrearty and McGlone were on the scoreboard for UUJ after the break and Frank Burns was also prominent throughout the closing stages. It looked like Donegal would see the game out but that late McHugh goal saw the students over the line.
