Friday night’s Junior Championship semi final between Rock and Owen Roes produced a close and intriguing battle between two very competitive teams.
In such a game creating and converting goal chances is always crucial and so it proved in this one. The teams were tied at 0-3 apiece midway through the first half when the North Tyrone side broke through the middle in a three v two situation. A goal seemed the most likely outcome but Michael Dooher’s pass to Ryan Devine failed to find its intended target and the chance was lost.
Rock on the other hand created a single goal scoring chance just before the break and wing back Niall Mc Williams made no mistake when he drove it to the net. That score sent Rock in at the break leading 1-5 to 0-4 and in a strong position to make it through to the final.
The second half saw Owen Roes increase their work-rate with Ryan Mc Aleer, Brendan Boggs and Cathal Mc Shane coming more and more into the game. Points from Andy Devine and Mc Shane did narrow the gap but Rock displayed all their experience and resolve with Aidan Gervin and Niall Mullin in particular marshalling the defence.
Up front Conor Mc Creesh began to make his presence felt as Aidan Mc Garrity hit the scores that ensured the former Tyrone and Ulster champions made it through to the 2016 county final.
Final score: Rock 1-09, Owen Roes 0-10.
