Coalisland Fianna 1-17

Edendork St Malachy’s 1-7

Former all star Lynette McShane rolled back the years and helped steer her new Coalisland side to the Tyrone junior football final. The former Carrickmore ace racked up 1-5 against a battling Edendork at Stewartstown. McShane who enjoyed phenomenal success with Carrickmore in the senior championship during a long career transferred to the Fianna at the start of the season and now finds herself in yet another final.

The Fianna turned in a strong display in difficult conditions and eventually led 0-12 to 1-4 at the break after starting well, going behind and then finishing strongly. Points from Niamh McKernan, Nicola Murphy and Caoimhe Quinn gave Coalisland the perfect start but 1-3 from Meave Maxwell helped put Edendork in front with McKernan and Emma Cummings responding for the Island.

Cummings landed two quick fire points and full forward Una Robinson was also on target as Coalisland began to pull away. Edendork’s response was a single point from Maxwell. Lynette McShane 0-2, Chloe Corr and Cummings increased the gap by the break but, battling gamely, the St Malachy’s were still not out of the tie. Eireann Palmer, McReynolds and McCaffery worked hard at the back while up front Maxwell was proving hard to mark.

Within ten minutes of the restart as both teams traded chances and Maxwell pointed, Coalisland latched on a goal. A high ball came off the upright and McShane threw herself across the goalmouth to bravely steer the ball home. The experienced midfielder added a further 0-3 with Maxwell keeping the scoreboard ticking over for Edendork.

Cummings and Murphy wrapped up the evening’s scoring with Coalisland well in control in all sectors of the park. It was disappointment for the St Malachy’s who will now turn all their attentions to the league.

Apart from McShane, Coalisland were best served by Niamh McKernan, Aisling Mc Kernan, Ikeya Collins and Emma Cummings. They can now look forward to facing the winners of the Castlederg v Fintona semi-final.

In another close encounter at Trillick, Fintona progressed to face Mna na Deirge in the Junior Championship semi-final. The Pearses enjoyed a 3-11 to 2-9 win over Badoney in their Championship quarter-final replay.
