Carrickmore Eire Og edged out their great rivals Dungannon Eoghan Ruadh in a highly competitive and very entertaining Senior Hurling Final at Healy Park on Sunday. A single point separated the teams after a see saw battle that produced some superb scores and high quality play from both sides. An injury time point from the stick of Aidan Kelly ensured the Benburb Cup returned to Carrickmore on a final score-line of 1-14 to 1-13.

There was little between them throughout the match with the sides level on three occasions in the opening half. Indeed only a single point separated the teams at half time following two late scores from the inspirational Aidan Kelly as Eire Og reached the break 0-8 to 0-7 ahead. During the opening half all seven of Eoghan Ruadh’s scores came from the stick of county star Damien Casey.

Casey then landed the opening two scores of the second period to edge his team in front once more before Eire Og responded with three points of their own to go two ahead. County minor Brannan Molloy landed Eoghan Ruadh’s tenth point of the day before man of the match Sean Og Grogan took a pass from Peadar Daly and then finished to the net to put four points between the teams. Within a minute Aidan Kelly stretched his team’s lead to five points and it looked like there was only going to be one winner. However back came Eoghan Ruadh and when Mattie Mulgrew finished the ball to the net in the fifty sixth minute the game was once more in the melting pot.

Damien Casey’s eleventh point of the game drew the teams level once again with the clock ticking towards sixty minutes. As time ran out referee Mark Taggart penalised the Eoghan Ruadh defence and Aidan Kelly sealed the win with his sixth point of the match for what was a memorable victory for the men in black and amber.
