Glenelly 2-10

Clann na nGael  1-11

The North Tyrone derby in the Tyrone ladies intermediate championship final lived up to expectations at Urney on Sunday evening. Played in front of a bumper crowd, Glenelly edged out Clann na nGael by two points after a pulsating sixty odd minutes that was in the balance right until the end.

An fortuitous goal from Glenelly’s impressive midfielder Aishling O’Kane on fifty minutes plus a red card for Clann’s Fionnuala Conwell proved to be pivotal moments in a game that had for long periods look destined to end in a draw.

It was all square at the break after Clan Na nGael managed to reel in a five point lead which Glenelly had amassed during the opening 27 minutes. Nicola Bradley’s goal and points from Devlin, Sheerin, Morris and O’Kane gave the Plumbridge girls what appeared to be the perfect start.

With the game appearing in danger of slipping away from her team up stepped veteran Anne Daly as she took the game to St Josephs, scoring a quick brace of points as well as being involved in a massive push by her team as half time approached.

That determination led to a Clann Na nGael goal which gave them the lead just shy of the short whistle after Mairead Conwell collected a poor kick out and drove the ball to the net. However Eimear Donaghey levelled things just before half time with a close range score.

In the second half points from Sheerin and Devlin opened a gap before Conwell was sent to the line. At that stage things didn’t look good for Brian Dooher’s side but once again they rallied and an exchange of points between Conwell, Ward and Devlin levelled things for a second time.

O’Kane then found the net for Glenelly when a long range effort dropped over the head of Clann keeper Maureen Dooher to leave it a three point game.

Once again back came Clan Na nGael as they pressed but squandered a couple of chances before Conwell landed a free. That score was cancelled out by another Devlin free with a late Doherty point the final bit of action.

No surprise then that it turned out to be a hard fought battle between two very good sides who gave everything with the St Joseph’s securing senior status for next year and a place in the Ulster Club series later in the year.

Glenelly scorers: Fiona Marie Devlin 0-5, Aishling O’Kane 1-1, Nicola Bradley 1-0, Siobhan Sheerin 0-2, Patricia Morris 0-1, Eimear Donaghey 0-1.

Clann na nGael: Mairead Conwell 1-4, Anne Daly 0-3, Niamh Doherty 0-3, Hannah Ward 0-1
