The second quarter final of Saturday’s double header ended spectacularly when second half Galbally sub Enda Mc Garrity thumped home an incredible goal to ensure his team got a second bite at the championship cherry.

Trailing by three points deep in injury time Mc Garrity, who appeared to be limping throughout his time on the pitch, picked up the ball and carried it forward before unleashing a shot that nearly lifted the net from the rigging to finish the game Galbally 2-6, Derrylaughan 0-12.

This was a low scoring but highly competitive match with both sides enjoying periods of dominance. There was never more than two points between them until Derrylaughan captain Ciaran Quinn landed a spectacular point as the game entered additional time. Lesser teams would have thrown in the towel but The Pearses dug deep, remained disciplined and fashioned a wonderful game saving score from Mc Garrity.

The first half was tough and competitive with both defences on top. The Kevin Barrys looked more potent than their opponents during that thirty minutes with scores from Tomas and Darragh Carney, Liam Gervin and Brian Kennedy opening up a 0-6 to 1-2 lead at the break. Galbally struggled to make the most of their limited chances but Sean Murphy’s seventh minute goal and Paul Rafferty’s long range free right on half time made sure they were still very much in the game at the short whistle.

Galbally introduced Micky Murphy after the break and both he and Declan Murphy came close to scoring the goal that could well have changed the course of the game. The Pearses missed several other good chances as the Kevin Barry’s goal appeared to lead a charmed life. Meanwhile the loughshore men made the most of their limited opportunities to extend their lead as the game reached its closing stages.

A real captain’s point from Ciaran Quinn with seven minutes remining followed by another from Ciaran Gervin appeared to have sealed the win for Derrylaughan before Mc Garrity’s pile-driver ensured a replay would be needed.

Final score Galbally 2-6, Derrylaughan 0-12.
