Tyrone 1-18 Down 2-6

Tyrone experienced little difficulty in advancing to the quarter final of the Ulster minor championship when they beat a disappointing Down side at Healy Park on Sunday afternoon.

The home side dominated throughout and they were well on their way to victory by the break after establishing a 1-11 to 0-3 lead.

Red Hands captain Conor McKenna opened the scoring but Ryan Treanor soon had the sides level. That was as good as it got for Down though as Tyrone took control. Lee Brennan, Pauric McAnenly, James Darcy and midfielder Ronan Nugent all weighed in with quality scores to give them a 0-7 to 0-1 advantage at the end of the opening quarter.

Fintan McClure then landed a peach from out on the left wing before Down defender Killian McEvoy responded from a free. McAnenly and Frank Aiken exchanged points before Tyrone struck for their goal after half an hour.

A shot from Nugent came back of the post and McClure reacted first to blast to the bottom left hand corner of the net past Marc Reid. In first half injury time McKenna pointed from play and Brennan added another free to leave them well on top.

Tyrone picked up were they had left off on the restart with Macaulay Quinn, McKenna and half back Enda McGarrity [2] all landing points inside ten minutes. Treanor then opened Down’s second half account before they scored a 44th minute penalty from substitute Tiernan Rushe.

Treanor added a point but Tyrone assumed control again with points from Quinn and substitute duo Jonah Lafferty and Conal McLernon. James Guinness pointed for the visitors before substitute Stephen McConville found the net with the last kick of the game but it only served to put a slightly better look on the scoreboard. Tyrone have no time to rest on their laurels as they face Monaghan next Sunday in the quarter final.
