Mayo 0-8 Tyrone 2-14

Tyrone produced a superb display in Castlebar on Sunday afternoon to collect the two league points at the expense of Mayo for a result that ensures their division one status for 2019.

In the end twelve points separated the two sides and that winning margin in no way flatters a Tyrone side who playing some great football throughout the seventy odd minutes. Mattie Donnelly and Tom Parsons exchanged early points before wind assisted Tyrone took control. Niall Sludden, Lee Brennan, Connor McAliskey and a brace from team Captain Donnelly increased Tyrone’s advantage with the superb Frank Burns landing a brilliant score from distance as well.

Colm Boyle was then very lucky to escape with a yellow card for a bad challenge on Hugh Pat McGeary with the Pomeroy man having to be stretchered from the field, he had been superb up until then. Boyle though was then sent off for a second yellow while Tyrone lost Padraig McNulty to a straight red card which looked a harsh decision. Colm Cavanagh and Andy Moran were black carded in an incident packed first half before two late frees from substitute Conor Loftus cut the gap to 0-8 to 0-3 at the break.

Loftus had the opening score of the second half as well from another free but in the 4th minute Cathal McShane played the ball to Brennan who showed great composure to first of all dummy his marker before blasting the ball to the net. Declan McClure, McAliskey and Donnelly all tagged on points as Tyrone moved well clear.

Loftus pointed for Mayo but Tyrone replied with an outstanding score from the boot of Brennan from an almost impossible angle, a point that makes him the leading marksman in division one. Substitute Conall McCann then fired in an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net and while Fergal Boland and Neil Douglas had Mayo points it was damage limitation at that stage. In injury time at the end of the game Parsons won a penalty but Loftus drove the spot kick high and wide which just about summed up the home side’s afternoon.
