Errigal Ciaran 2-8 St Macartans 1-7
Despite holding Errigal Ciaran to just two second half points St Macartan’s saw their wonderful unbeaten run in Tyrone club football come to an end on the opening day of the new season at Dunmoyle.
As expected this was a hard fought physical encounter in which Errigal bolstered by a raft of youthful quality led 2-6 to 0-4 at the break. There was power and a clinical edge to the hosts but with Jolene and Cathy Donnelly, Lynda Donnelly and Deirdre McCarroll among the points Macartan’s rallied. Colleen McQuaid’s penalty conversion hauled them back into the game but Errigal held out for the win.
Carrickmore St Colmcille’s 2-10 Sperrin Og 1-10
Gemma Begleys brace of goals helped Carrickmore to their opening night win against neighbours Sperrin Og at Pairc Colmcille. The hosts trailed 1-4 to 0-2 before Begley fired in an excellent goal. A second goal followed but it was the Greencastle girls who led at the break. Begley and Meabh McCallan impressed throughout in an entertaining free flowing game, the lead changing several times before Begley and Laura Fullerton points pulled them away to win by three.
Elsewhere Dungannon accounted for Killeeshil by two points as Ardboe opened their Senior return with a hard fought victory away to Clann Na Gael. Rebekah Forbes and Annie Devlin scored the O’Donavan Rossa goals. Glenelly racked up a big score line at Strabane as they eased to a comfortable win.
DIVISION TWO
Clodagh Poyntz came off the bench for Cappagh at Ballinamullan and she made a valuable contribution including a vital goal as the hosts beat Galbally. The Pearses led by three at half time but goals from Poyntz and Caitlin Kelly sealed the win.
Young County star Sasha Byrne was the star of the show for Aghyaran as they thumped an out of sorts Omagh at St Patrick’s Park. The St Enda’s were never in this contest with limited scoring threat and they also lost their goalkeeper with a serious hand injury. Byrne top scored in a one sided affair.
Last year’s Junior champions Coalisland turned in a solid shift at home to a battling Dromore only to come up short by eight points in the end. The St Dympna’s are determined to make a fist of this intermediate campaign.
DIVISION THREE
Kildress and Fintona played out an opening weekend draw in Division Three with Maeve Conway scoring a late Tones’ equaliser. Last year’s beaten league and championship finalists Castlederg enjoyed their early start against Badoney on Sunday. The Derg were made to fight all the way for victory with Roisin Devlin scoring the all important goal as Shannon Lynch, Laura McSorley, Marisa Lynch and Leah Lynch were among the points Clonoe and Beragh enjoyed big wins Edendork also beat the returning Rock while Trillick hit seven goals at Moy. Dearbhaile Gallagher 2-5, Emma Brennan 1-4, Nuala Kelly 2-0, Louise Mc Carney 1-1 and Shannen Gray 1-0 all contributed to a fine team performance.
