Pomeroy 2-13 St.Colmcille’s 3-11
Pomeroy’s brave bid to reach the All Ireland Intermediate final came up just short at the Athletic Grounds in Armagh on Sunday afternoon when they fell by the minimum margin at the hands of Leinster and Meath champions St.Colmcille’s.
The Plunketts were dealt a blow in the early stages of the game when the influential Kieran McGeary got injured and despite scoring two points he had to go off injured. St.Colmcilles then took a grip on proceedings with David O’Byrne netting and the lively James Conlon adding points for a 1-7 to 0-5 interval lead.
Two minutes into the second half Conlon grabbed a goal and when the superb Graham Reilly added a point from out on the left wing it looked all over with the scoreboard reading 2-8 to 0-6 after eight minutes. McGeary though was reintroduced and that sparked a spirited comeback from the Plunketts.
Frank Burns began the comeback when converting a penalty and minutes later John Loughran got through for a brilliant goal. The momentum had completely shifted and three Burns frees put Pomeroy two in front with ten minutes left. Reilly and Burns exchanged points before Christopher Colhoun left three between the sides with four minutes left. Moments later a Conor O’Byrne goal levelled matters but in the next attack Ryan Loughran put Pomeroy back in front. Robbie McCloskey equalised before a long range Ben Brennan free won the day for St.Colmcilles.
