Tyrone Senior Hurling championship semi finals
Wins for Eire Og’s and Eoghan Ruadh
Dungannon Eoghan Ruadh and Carrickmore will contest the 2016 Tyrone Senior Championship final next month following anticipated semi-final victories over Naomh Colum Cille and Omagh respectively on Friday evening.
O’Neill Park was the setting for the East Tyrone derby between Dungannon and NCC, but following a competitive opening quarter, Dungannon eventually clicked into gear as they eased their way to a 5-17 to 0-10 success.
Brannon Molloy’s first minute goal provided Dungannon with an ideal start, but for much of the first half NCC with Caolan Devlin and Niall O’Neill punishing Ruadh indiscipline enjoyed the upper hand. Devlin brought a superb reflex save from Dungannon net minder John Devlin, who tipped the sliothar over the bar on 15 minutes for a 1-3 to 0-5 score line as the Cille’s threatened. However, two goals in the space of a minute from Molloy and Damian Casey established a 3-4 to 0-5 lead and the hosts never looked back.
Leading 3-7 to 0-7 at half time the Ruadh pulled clear on the resumption with further goals from Matthew Mulgrew and Kiefer Morgan. The loss of Chris Cross to a sickening hand injury compounded the challenger’s efforts as they only managed three second half points.
Meanwhile up in Healy Park, Omagh were returning to the Tyrone Senior championship stage for the first time in 14 years, when they faced reigning champions Carrickmore. Omagh are to be commended for their efforts in reviving hurling in the area as their primary objective is to provide a platform for their underage teams in the coming years.
Eamon Miley goaled twice in the opening stages as Omagh enjoyed a productive start but once last year’s Ulster Intermediate finalists got going they turned the screw to run out facile 5-29 to 2-5 winners.
