Owen Roes Club, which in the 1970s was an amalgamation of Donagheady and Leckpatrick parishes, stunned Tyrone football in the semi final of the 1975 Tyrone Senior Championship by beating the mighty Ardboe, led at that time by the great Frank McGuigan. Unfortunately for the North Tyrone lads they were beaten by reigning champions Trillick in the final on 31st August.
Nevertheless, that occasion still ranks as the club’s finest and to commemorate the 40th anniversary, they are holding a unique celebration on Sunday 30th August. The club has invited the players who took part in the final (unfortunately the captain Frank ‘Scamp’ Kelly died earlier this year), to the celebration. Notable players who participated for Owen Roes include Tyrone star Patsy Kerlin and former Tyrone senior manager Danny Ball.
The event itself will begin with an over 35 challenge game between Owen Roe O’Neill’s Leckpatrick and Clann na Gael (Aughabrack and Dunamanagh) to represent the two parts of the amalgamated 1970s team, followed by a BBQ with music.
No doubt both the semi-final and final will both be replayed countless times during the evening. There will also be on display coverage by the media from that year’s championship along with some photographs and memorabilia of that era.
Also enclosed is a photo of the two captains, Barney Mc Anespie of Trillick and Frank Kelly with Paddy Devlin who refereed the final.
