It may have been well over two months since they beat Monaghan at Donagh but the Tyrone under 16s have been busy preparing for their all Ireland semi-final clash. The game has been arranged for Wednesday evening with Galway the opposition but the venue is yet to be confirmed. It may be a strange day for a semi-final but as the Tyrone management team of Brian McGinn and Kevin Bogle admit they have to get on with the job.
Tyrone looked very strong in their Ulster campaign turning in a fine display to see off the Farney girls in difficult conditions. The game ended 3-14 to 3-7 with Chloe McCaffrey finishing the day with a fine 1-4 while the impressive Roisin Devlin bagged 0-6. However this was a good all round team performance. In defence Coblaith McKenna and Shaunna Stephenson worked tirelessly while at midfield Aoibhiann McHugh and Meabh McElroy were dominant against an experienced Monaghan pair. They will have to be at their best against a quality Galway team
The challenge now to get over the line against Galway will be Tyrone’s toughest task to date. The Connacht side will be very focused after their under 14s were expelled from the all Ireland under 14 final over an unregistered player. The westerners will lack nothing in motivation and the determination to secure a final berth is clear to the Tyrone backroom team.
“We don’t know a lot about Galway but we are certain they are strong all over the park and they also have a very good goalkeeper,” claims Bogle as the build up continues. “Against Mayo their keeper made a couple of great stops and they would go into the semi-final as favourites. The under 14s missed out and their minors are also in the last four of the championship. There’s a buzz in the county and we know we will be up against it but we have plenty of quality players. We will have a game plan and we are not just going to make up the numbers. We are focused on the final and that’s our goal.”
Tyrone will go into the tie minus centre half back Stephenson. An ankle operation means that she misses the tie but apart from that the build up has been good and everyone else is available for selection. “The girls returned to us ready to put the work in and anything we have asked them to do they certainly have responded well. It’s been a group effort. We are in this all together and that has been the way we have been this season from the very start.”
A difficult task then for this youthful Tyrone side. They face a long trip for the last four encounter but wherever the tie is fixed for Tyrone are focused and determined to seal a final spot and what a boost that would be for the Tyrone ladies game.
