With five games each played before tonight and only one win between the two sides this was a hugely important league game in Eglish this evening. With 15 minutes gone Donaghmore were the team looking most likely to secure the points as they raced into a 0-4 to 0-1. Eglish however didn’t panic and kicked the next six points of the game thanks mainly to the accuracy of Peter McCann from frees. Points from Damian McCaul and Deasun Quinn brought Donaghmore back into the game but a Sean McKillion had the final say of the half to leave the home side 0-8 to 0-7 ahead at the break.
The second half produced a much more open and attractive game of football in which the two sides produced three goals. The pick of those goals was a brilliant Conal McNulty goal after Eglish turned over the ball and counter attacked the Donaghmore defence. Eglish dominated the middle third of the field in the second half with Philip Barker and Emmett McKenna winning the vast majority of the aerial duels. The started the second period with four points in a row with Peter McCann and Matty Jordan amongst the scorers. Dan Toner was a point scorer for Donaghmore during this period but the Eglish men moved seven points ahead when McNulty found the net to leave the scoreline 1-12 to 0-8.
Donaghmore refused to go away though and rallied and Toner found the net for them after some excellent work from Mark Heatherington. Matty Jordan and Sean McKillion struck back to keep Eglish in control of the game. However the game wasn’t over yet and a high ball into the Eglish defence caused confusion and it fell nicely for Sean McCaul to find the net and reduce the Eglish lead to just two points. The game ended with a well taken free by Sean McKillion to leave the final scoreline Eglish 1-15 Donaghmore 2-9
