The GAA clubs and communities around Tyrone have shown their support for Ladies Gaelic Football’s CLIMB4CLARE fundraising initiative. Clare Clarke works for Ladies Gaelic Football and is battling a terminal cancer diagnosis. With two children, aged 6 and 15, Clare realised there was no educational support available to help her kids, particularly the youngest one, understand the ramifications of cancer and the associated chemotherapy, hospital visits, fatigue and so on.
The CLIMB programme is designed to help children come to terms with and better understand the illness. At the moment, the CLIMB programme is only available in Belfast. This programme is exactly what Clare wants and needs for her children but rather than send them up to Belfast to do the course, Clare has decided that CLIMB should be available for all families all over Ireland.
The Ladies Gaelic Football Association is working with Cancer Focus NI and The Irish Cancer Society to ensure the CLIMB programme can be delivered all over Ireland. As a result of the fundraising undertaken in Tyrone and other counties, a cohort of people from 14 different centres and areas across Ireland will be trained as Facilitators in January, setting the wheels in motion for course delivery in March time. A support worker in Cookstown is amongst those being trained, meaning local accessibility to this programme in Tyrone.
Huge thanks are extended to Loughmacrory, Galbally and Omagh GFC for hosting and promoting walks and to all those individuals and clubs who supported them. IRISH TV gave great coverage of the event and thanks are extended to Malachi Cush, Cliodhna Fullen and Declan Grimes for their work. Thanks to Dromore Ladies GFC and Rock Primary School for their donations also. Eileen Jones, Martina Dillon, Eilish Gormley, Michaela O’Neill, Nicola Canavan and Gemma Begley have been to the forefront of the fundraising efforts in Tyrone, creating awareness of the initiative and organising fundraisers. So far, money raised in Tyrone totals over £2700. More information can be gleaned from the climb4clare Facebook page or on the LGFA website.
