Aghyaran U-16 girls completed a historic grade one U-16 double at Loughamacrory on Sunday when they defeated Errigal Ciaran in the Championship final with three points to spare on a final score line of 0-12 to 1-6. The girls had completed the first leg of the much sought after double five days earlier defeating Sperrin Og in the league final on a winning score line of 4-15 to 2-5.
The St Davogs girls turned in five star performances in both finals and while there were a number of good performances in both games it would be unfair to single out anyone in particular.
Sunday’s final saw the team work tirelessly around the middle third of the field and their strength on the ball and positional awareness all over the field contributed to some great scores. The scoring accuracy of the lively Aimee Coyle who was a thorn in both defences was something to see. She finished with a personal tally of 2-19 over the course of the two finals hitting 2-10 against Sperrin Og and 0-9 against Errigal Ciaran.
While Aimee may receive many of the plaudits she was well assisted in the forward line by Sasha Byrne, who scored two splendid goals in the second half in the league final, Colleen Carlin, Maria Mc Hugh and Bronagh Gallen.
The ceaseless work-rate of midfield pairing of team captain Aoibhinn Mc Hugh and Megan Mc Menamin provided cover for the defence and created numerous scoring opportunities for the forwards in both games.
The Aghyaran defence worked hard as a unit with fine defending by Emma Mc Menamin, Aoife Byrne, Louise Carlin and corner backs Goan and Mc Glinchey.
Aghyaran scorers in the league final were: Aimee Coyle 2-10, Sasha Byrne 2-1 Aoibhinn Mc Hugh 0-2 Aoife Byrne & Alana Carlin 0-1 each.
