The GAA Handball All Ireland 60×30 Adult championship will reach a conclusion this weekend and Tyrone remain in the hunt for two titles, with finals on Saturday and Sunday. All eyes will be on Abbeylara on Saturday as Breacach’s Johnny Woods bids to complete an impeccable record at minor level on the courts in 2014 when he teams up with Ryan Mullan in the All Ireland minor doubles decider. Then at Na Fianna, Dublin, on Sunday will see Maeve McElduff and Aoife Kelly take on Kildare in the final of the Ladies Minor 60×30 doubes. Throw in the All Ireland Juvenile 60×30 Championship semi finals where the champions of Ulster travel to Wexford and Kilkenny to face the Leinster winners and another busy weekend schedule is in store for the Red Hand team.
Action will commence in Abbeylara on Saturday at 11am as Woods and Mullan bid to add the 60×30 minor doubles crown to the 40×20 honours secured back in April. The duo have shown superb form this term and Woods of course has already achieved the unprecedented distinction of claiming a clean sweep of Minor All Ireland singles crowns across the three codes of 40×20, one wall and 60×30. If he can manitain that run and win the doubles with Mullan on Saturday, Tyrone will have claimed every available title at minor level. Woods took a 21-19 third game thriller in the Minor singles final a fortnight ago against Daniel Hayes of Tipperary and his power, pace and impressive character are traits that will mark him down as favourite to add another gold celtic cross to his 2014 collection. Indeed it should be noted that one of his toughest tests of the 60×30 championship series, in addition to the All Ireland decider, came in the Ulster final where he went to a third game also before getting the better of his doubles partner, Ryan Mullan, 21-17.
The duo take on Tipperary’s Daniel Hayes and Jonathan Walsh in the final on Saturday and there is no doubt that it looks set to be a very tough and keenly contested affair. However the Tyrone lads do look very well placed to complete a remarkable season in the minor grade for the county.
On Sunday Maeve McElduff, fresh from her All Ireland Minor ladies 60×30 singles championship win, will team up with Aoife Kelly in the All Ireland Minor 60×30 doubles final. They travel to Na Fianna to take on Kildare’s Hannah and Katie Dagg and that should be another tough battle. McElduff has also enjoyed her best ever season on the court with Tyrone senior championship success followed by All Ireland minor singles clean sweep and will be strongly fancied with Kelly to add the doubles honours on Sunday.
The Tyrone juvenile team have been training very hard for a crack at All Ireland 60×30 championship honours also in 2014. The team will travel to Wexford and Kilkenny on Sunday to take on the Leinster champions in the All Ireland semi finals. A big journey for the Tyrone juvenile team but there are high hopes of a bold showing in most grades.
